Using starsector sprites for mods
« on: June 07, 2017, 12:18:09 AM »

I was wondering, would it be ok to utilise sprites from starsector and using them to create a mod for a different game?
The game I'm currently referencing is Wayward Terran Frontier: Zero Falls.

I'm not intending to make any profit, I just would like to see some starsector ships in my wayward terran frontier campaign and share it with the community, and I hope I can obtain permission to do so.

The Gemini as an example.

And the unused Heavy Fighter.
(mod has not been publicly released, yet)

If Fractal Softworks do not want me using their sprites, I will take the mod down.

I agree. A developer recently used Starsector sprites for an arcade style shooter. Needless to say, Alex was not happy or impressed.

Thanks for asking!

For a non-profit mod for another game, I'm generally ok with it if someone asks first. Of course, I reserve the right to say no if the mod is objectionable, or for any reason whatsoever, really, and to withdraw permission at any time for any reason.

But, in this particular case: go for it! Provided that there's nothing in the other game's EULA that would, say, assign them rights for any modded content, or something like that, that would require you to have rights to the content you're using for the mod. I doubt that's the case, but thought I'd mention it just to be on the safe side.

(And, naturally, for a commercial project, the answer would always be a firm "no". Although, that probably doesn't need saying.)

Thank you very much! Yeah, it pays to be on the safe side (sometimes literally), heh.

I understand the concerns about intellectual property, and will respect your decisions, if you have any concerns do just let me know!

I'll post sone links to them once they are public.

I'll look forward to seeing the mods. I need to revisit Wayward Frontier. I gave it a look but never bought it.

The wolf and the in-game interior, custom normal and roughness maps are generated with the assistance of a modtool being developed by one of the WTF devs, Jan.
With the way the mod files are set up they should be randomly occuring in WTF's campaign, going about their assigned faction's business until you encounter/interrupt them.

The wolf is described in the mod as a Seven Stars Coalition Patrol Corvette.

Quoted description

"A faily mobile gunboat/Corvette with four missile tubes and two small mounts.
A SSC patrol vessel with capable stopping power. It focuses on attacks from long range where it can maintain it's distance and facing, especially due to it's fragility on it's flanks.
As an additional preventive measure, it's missile storage magazines have been walled off from the main reactor, though if both magazines detonate, the ship tends to break into two.

Base Sprite obtained from "Starsector" by Fractal Softworks, with conditional use permissions.

I'd suggest you use the weapon-less ships from the Kitbash Database rather than the normal ones, it would be less confusing.

There we go, with the updated version of the free mod tool (referenced in spoiler above) created by one of the WTF:ZF devs, Jan. Normal control with the curve chart adds a whole lot of functionality!
All the lighting effects are based on the normal maps, and all the normal maps are rendered from the diffuse map (the base sprite).
Add a custom emission map for the lights and volia!
Pretty.

Thanks again Tartiflette!

Fascinating! For the wolf, you should have totally created some manner of laser weaponry at the front as opposed to somewhat cosmetic armor, or perhaps make a variant with a huge laser ((Which any player can do actually thanks to how fancy the WTF system is)) I'm not sure you would be able to feasibly power the laser on a smaller ship, but it's a thought? Missiles is a good choice too.
