Fighters need to "escort" less
« on: May 05, 2017, 09:57:42 PM »

I see alot of times fighters tend to escort certain ships, who they pick I am not sure, but as you see here, all the fighters are hugging my paragon like glue. Even bombers are trying to "escort", while the carriers they are from are dying...

think they have an overzealous tendency to escort the player ship... trying to impress the boss?

Someone mentioned in another thread that flying with the new fighters is like playing through the finale of Ender's Game. This is a good comparison.
I just wish there was some way of telling them "okay, mission accomplished now go and attack stuff please". Or "cover the fleet. equalise wings between all ships and shoot every missile you see".

You abandoned your vulnerable carriers and AI immediately attacked them - good move on admiral AI. In this situation then enemy ships basically hug carriers sending fighters to guard or attack is not very effective. I think AI saves them from enemy weapons this way.

Not entirely right. That many fighters can quickly and effectively dispatch one enemy ship after the other if the AI ordered it to. Escorting the player ship and catching missiles flying his way is pretty much a waste here. Even attacking the player's target would be a waste, since a Paragon can easily take care of an Astral. (but that second point we'll consider beyond even good AI, it's just situational)

How effective do you guys find the engage/regroup fighter command?  It doesn't always seem to me that they heed this order all that much.

Extremely effective? Maybe your carrier is as fast or faster than some of your fighters, they it might seems as if they'd not come back. There are also fighters like the Xyphos which cannot engage.

The game was completed 8 years ago and we get a free expansion every year.

Arranging holidays in an embrace with the Starsector is priceless.

That is on purpose right? Because on the stats it says it has 3000 range...

Xyphos' operate off of the target uplink on the mothership, that's why they can't go off and engage. They can, however, go to and escort friendly ships within 3000 range and use their target uplinks
