QoL: System markers for interesting locations
« on: April 25, 2017, 04:19:58 AM »

Since we now have procedurally generated sectors, it can get a little confusing remembering where you've been and which system it was that had that cool thing you wanted to finish exploring, but didn't have the cargo capacity or time to do it earlier.

It would be nice, therefore, to be able to manually mark systems with a "Point Of Interest" icon. This could be implemented as an additional option in the drop-down list when you click on a system from the sector map, and could show up with an icon similar to those systems with a warning beacon attached.

That way the player can easily mark a particular system amid a cluster of confusingly similar stars, and be able to return to it at a later date with less hassle.

Thoughts?

I think it's a nice idea.

I don't really have a great deal else to say, but if at some point we can get a notes function so we can write notes in our tripad, then linking the PoIs to a note entry so you can write some longer text in there would be great too!

It would be especially useful for not making notes of by alt-tabbing out and using notepad

Like an in-game notepad for reminders of derelict ships and other things.

Yeah, player placed map notes are pretty much a must, IMO.

Especially now that I've realized that the fleet log only keeps notes for the last cycle. Everything that is older is lost. Now where was that domain-era survey ship...

Bumping this to get the Devs' attention, since a lot of people seem to want it (based on other posts/comments around the forum)

double this.

using physical pen and paper to markdown points of interest for later returns is a bit wrong for game type, result is missed content and nothing more.

I have a rudimentary solution: Pen, and paper.

Seriously, that's what I've been doing. xD  I have a notepad filled with names and little quipts like, "Space Station? Redacted high? Stock up before go to: Systemnamehere"
Or
"140 days till pods in gondo sys. fall"

Stuff like that.  So, if you want to keep track... yeah.  This is ONE way, which might work. I even draw little maps cause I find it fun to do so.

I use a spreadsheet, but same idea.  I'm not sold on an in-game notes feature; each and every other major time-dependent game feature needs to be represented in it, so it could break ETA on anything non-combat -- say outposts or not-so-mocked-up markets.

I've got a TODO item for something similar, just don't think I'll be able to do it for the .1 release - plus it'll make sense to look at it later to see how it plays with other high-level features.

Fine by me! Just happy to know it's on the table. :D

Bumping this once more because earmarking systems high on resources for potential exploitation or systems with [REDACTED] battlestations could come in handy.

Even being able to create captains logs and putting them as a sticky under "important" would be great.

Yeah, but there is no way to tell the level of the beacon from the starmap meaning you have to physically move to the area in question to see what's there.

Ah, very true. That would be nice.
