This is a public service announcement:

It's absolutely *** fantastic (and it's still in beta).

It's pretty much FTL + Elite: Dangerous + Freelancer (but with better controls). Super-responsive controls, gorgeous graphics, and the game is absolutely punishing, difficulty-wise. Highly recommend if you're looking for a game to play right now. Also probably the only instance of my life where the game is cooler than the trailer. Anyone else played this yet?

The trailer looks awesome and something that would scratch an itch that I have since the old X-Wing vs Tie fighter games.

Looks a lot more arcadey than X/T/XvT/Alliance, less of a simulation

Not necessarily a bad thing; just an observation.

This has popped up on my Steam recommendations a couple of times recently, but the gameplay looks too arcadey for my taste; more akin to the old Descent games than the X-Wing / Wing Commander games.

Gave it a go.  Beat it with all three ships.

It's almost a great game.  Almost.

It has absolutely beautiful visuals, smart controls, and a radical conceptual approach to the traditional Wing Commander style of campaign that makes every run feel like an adventure. 

But it's marred by poor game tuning, poor weapon balance, poor design decisions and a team that looks like it's too exhausted to clean up the product and get it out of Alpha.  I'm going to wait for their next major update (slated sometime this month, maybe) before making a final call, but that's where I'm leaning.  It is full of great ideas that have failed to gel largely because of the "little things", like getting weapons and combat tuned correctly.

Jesus christ, I am so bad at video games. Still haven't managed to beat it with one haha...

I hear you on the poor weapon balance - there are a few weapons who seem like they're designed for the initial few stages, but quickly become terrible very fast, like the pulse laser or the shock rifle. Others like the flak cannon or gatling ii simply own. I think they nailed the core gameplay bit though, it's pretty great to just come home to after work and just *** *** up haha

It's not a bad game... just wasn't a great game, which is disappointing, because it was soooo close. 

And yeah, the balance is goofy.  Flak Cannon Mk. 1 and Thermal Gun Mk. II pretty much pwn the game, lol.  Look at the math and everything is geared towards kiting and flying backwards, every single fight.

Well, it's hard to have kiting as a viable tactic at all and not have it the most viable tactic at the same time.

Forcing your own terms on the enemy has always been the 1st rule of warfare.

That's kind of my point (re: kiting).  In a game like this, it shouldn't be viable, or it's the best game in town.  It'll be interesting to see if it gets addressed by the developers :)

Last build I tried was better; they fixed some of the worst of it and added a lot of new content.
