Defend Planet/Object X from A :  basically as it says, defend a planet/object for some time against a small fleet or two for a period of time till Captain Dickerson comes, or conversly, attack a planet for a smaller fleet of Dickerson's so they can survey it.

Patrol <points> report and return to <start>   Just make a loop and kill some baddies, possibly fail if not done in a paticular order or if you don't report back within a certain time.

Deliver ship "Mcursit Dumb" to x advanced cargo mission with cargo that can be destroyed or otherwise sold!

Recuse a Dickerson's Stranded fleet and take them to X   could be random mission/transmission or gotten from the board but basically. Get some extra fuel and supplies and save Grand Dickerson! Or... you know, just, kill him afterwards and take that for a small reputation hit, or worse.

I like that, something to make repair speed matter more and a way to make the AI attack you for to break the monotony of you always chasing them down.

So a bounty + courier mission, sounds interesting.

So a cargo contract without the part of buying the cargo yourself. Sounds good, maybe make it that you have to have a certain rep with the trader to let it trigger.

Arching mission paths and a way to be a bad pirate person, I like it.

gatekeeper: patrol X jump point and scan incoming ships' cargo. engage and destroy any smugglers.

recce: path in front of an allied invasion/siege fleet and scout for them. probably requires a sensorlink of some kind which isn't in the game but probably could be.

blockade run: run an enemy blockade and deliver supplies to besieged defenders/guerillas in enemy territory.

spygames: sneak in running silent and deliver a spy to an enemy installation.

harry: attack an enemy fleet of importance, it's scouts / supply train/ mission-critical ships without engaging it's heavy warships.

exterminatus!: engage and destroy defenders above a hostile world, and then employ WMD to scorch it's population.

strategic strike: attack defending fleet(s), gain superiority over and then deliver an orbit-to-surface weapon to neutralize enemy production/C3 facility.

basically, the factions are at war but it doesn't feel real; they never really attack each other in any way that hurts.

generating missions that are then carried out in this vein that effect (HEAVILY) the enemy warmaking ability is a good step towards making the war "real"

How about a "false flag" mission?

Faction A will provide (or demand that you have) faction B ships to attack faction C. This should force the player to use ships that they aren't comfortable with while providing an interesting scenario.

That's very clever! I would love a mission to drive something suboptimal.  You will also have to take care to not get blasted by the faction's enemies. And if successful it will cause a diplomatic intsident that can turn to war.
