Be his wing-man
« on: May 16, 2016, 01:15:36 AM »

Lately I been trying an odd setup.

Normally I run a paragon or Onslaught and solo faceroll everything in my way. But I been having trouble fighting two enemy max level cap ships with escorts alone. But up-scaling to two Onslaught was kind of overkill and would cut my profit alot.

The solution was to use a max combat officer.

ordinace expertise
damage control
gunnary implants
power grid
target analysis

So for the onslaught I put all the most damage heavy expensive weapon as possible, with no mobility mobs and almost no PD.

While I fly the Apogee (Cargo and sensor support is awesome too!)

Hardened shield, aux thrusts, and only three lazers on the front. Then all the usual goodies.

This works by me flying in front of the onslaught, blocking shots and his line of sight, this way the AI will focus on what he can, which is what I allow him.

Some nasty alpha strikes from either bombers, burn engine onslaughts, or just flanking fleets the Apogee player will eaily deflect with that 0.3 damage / flux ratio. Followed by those Heavy maulers and autocannons on the back of the onslaught turns it into a battle fortress.

Its great fun, the Onslaught does all the damage while the apogee takes all the beating and uses beam weapons to help with annoying targets like wolves and such.

You should all try it sometimes, fly wing man to an AI with your biggest ship. Dominator + shade also works really well too.

Heh, I think most prefer to be the one behind the controls of the biggest ship!

I could see how your idea works and might even be fun but a player behind a properly built Onslaught (or something similar) doesn't even need an escort - just outfit it for max range and kite enemy cap ships. I do kinda like to play shield tank ships sometimes and the Apogee is pretty boss at that!

I used to do this in Zaphide's Exerelin during the 0.62 days.  Pilot a Medusa or Gedune's Dahaki (non-frigates had no peak performance at the time), and if I have leftover Logistics near the end (after level 50), bring a battleship to speed things up.  (In my case, Onslaught with IFed weapons like Thunderchiefs and Cains.)  Medusa with unlimited peak performance and hull regeneration (from Damage Control 10) can kill any unskilled enemy singlehandedly.  (No enemy had skills at the time, unless added by another mod).

During 0.65, I piloted a Hyperion while the rest of my fleet of thirty-something frigates (among Tempests, Wolves, Lashers, Cerberus, and maybe some Vigilance) stampeded over things.

I generally only pilot up to destroyer class ships. Anything larger is generally mostly turrets, so my flying it isn't as useful.

I usually fly a wolf, with 2(4) reaper torpedos, and try to use them at point blank range to kill enemy ships in one or two hits. Generally, I find that to be more effective use of my time. Capital ships, positioning isn't as important, and they tend to have turrets which do most of the work. The only significant advantage is the stat boost, which is no longer exclusively player's domain.

Sometimes, I use a Sunder, with a Pulse energy cannon thinggie (Rapid fire, limited ammo), but the AI can do that almost as well.

I think is easy for Simba and Mufasa sing the Circle of Life when they're on the top of the food chain, I bet the zebras hate that song.

Cigarettes are a lot like hamsters. Perfectly harmless, until you put one in your mouth and light it on fire

even in the x-series games i never fly anything bigger than a corvette (M6).

its just tooo slow and boring

i'm currently deploying in a medusa or wolf (or sunder if they throw a rly big fleet at me) while my fav officer (a steady pilot) deploys in a vanguard with a gauss .... which seems like the best ship+setup for a non-player imo

i'm also looking at the archer as an insane ship, 3 medium missile hardpoints with infinite ammo?? *WOW* (thats a volley of 12 missleswith a dps of 9000 and a mix of kinetic and high explosive damage)

i would love for there to be a 'wingman' command (and AI) or a wingman config on the officers page. because wingman and escort are NOT the same thing

Naw, I always fly the Afflictor, which is the equal to of having two battleships. I also bring another Afflictor along, which give me the firepower of 4 battleships in the fleet.

definitely in agreement there. Be nice if they'd use you as the focal point for their chosen attitude (aggro/steady/cautious/timid) instead of being completely silly

i was thinking u pair 2 officers together and then u get 'penalized' by being forced to deploy them together but then they think 2gether and act together and u could be one of the pairs too

but a special role just for a single officer, that might work too
