Just a random thought, because the weapon mount cover looks much more durable  ;D

This basically exists already. If you don't mount weapons, you can spend the OP you saved on armor- or hull-boosting hullmods. Unfortunately a lot of armor-boosting hullmods come with a drawback and I think they all require some investment in Technology skills. I think there also has been some discussion in the past about being able to buy Armor straight-up with OP, like you can vents and caps.
