3D Model Posting
« on: March 08, 2016, 01:15:15 PM »

Hey all, got myself a neat little 3D printer the other day and I've been trying it out. But I'm running low on ideas/models.

Anyone got any of their own 3D renders they'd like printed/any cool suggestions?

By the way, I'm pretty sure there was an Onslaught Fan Model before but I can't seem to find it. If someone can find it for me I'll print it and send it to Alex as a gift :)

What kind did you get?

I would make some warhammer 40k *** to play with friends. Be it actual models or terrain. Or any kind of tabletop games. Granted if you got the  patience to paint them.

Or you can just rip them off games.

I personally would go 3D scan and then make a bobble head of my self. Imagine all the fun we would have... oh yeah.

I've got a couple of WWII vehicles if you'd like any to test on.  KV-1, 2, Matildas, ISU-152s, and some others.  Or any wide assortment of weapons from both world wars.  Take your pick. :)

What file format?  I can do .obj easily enough, but maybe I can export it right to the format that your printer uses.

(also, some may or may not work since it's not one solid model, but hopefully the printer can work around that)

Ah, I can't export as .STL.  You'll have to do that yourself, sorry. :/

Anyways, the first few models are here.  Exporting doesn't take any time at all, but I'm pressed for time at the moment, so these 5 will do for the day.  You might have to fiddle with models, as some have extra turrets (which, in games like CoH1, can be hidden to make different vehicles), wrecked models, etc. so remember to delete those bits.

Hah, I'm not too worried about painting it. Having a 3D-printed model of this guy by itself will be awesome. I'll send you a PM with shipping details in a second.

Got an issue with the model I'm afraid, Any ideas? Looks like it's missing faces or something

Non closed model? Messed up normals? Multi objects model? Face penetrations? Btw, it is probably that the models have to be made "print-ready". The requirements for print and rendering are very differents, and I doubt it can be done automaticaly.

I downloaded Kazi's model and have noticed a few reasons why it might not be working.

**Disclaimer. Although I have some experience with 3D modelling, I have never tried to 3D print a model. All my information comes from the internet**

First problem I noticed is that the normals are flipped. I don't know if this is because of the format the file is in or if there is a mistake in the model, but I would try flipping the normals and see if that helps.

Second, you have some rather gnarly overlapping geometry. I've taken a few screenshots of it so you can see what I mean.
