if you went to purchase the atlas... it would be under the capital tab... just saying.

the game does not make a distinction between military and civilian ships, at least not at this time.

You won't be able to refit fighters and bombers at all. They're designed/balanced around having a particular set of weapons and would be very broken if you could change it. Which ones you pick for your fleet -out of quite a few that are available- is the choice here, not how they're outfitted.

Because its size is in the capital range, the worlds largest Oil tanker is a bit over 100 meters larger than the worlds largest Aircraft carrier but you would never call it a capital ship in a combat situation. Hell a container ship is about 50 meters longer than an Aircraft Carrier.

Just saying.

We definitely need a brother to lone Onslaught. Maybe a Ultra heavy armored ship with less turrets than the Onslaught, more frontal high caliber firepower and a Directional shield half the Onslaught's size.

To be entirely clear, a heavy cruiser and a dreadnought are completely different things. One is an armored cruiser, the other is an 'all big gun' battleship.

I would love to see having all ships being more dreadnought like, but as of now, including few of them would break the balancing hard because dreadnoughts are essentially very streamlined ships.  Starfarer has lot of ships with weapon hard points layouts that makes no sense, so something as efficient as dreadnoughts would be pretty uber in comparison.

Imagine a cruiser with 5 medium or 3 heavy ballistic mounts that has good firing arc (about 180 ~ 270 degrees?) with huge overlapping area, with 4 ~ 6 small mounts for PDS and enough vent to actually use them all.  YUMMMM ;D

Eagle came pretty close with its 3 medium energy mounts, but it's so slow and for some reason features 3 ballistic mounts that can only shoot forward when the ship can barely turn.  Enforcer is actually pretty much up there, with 5 medium mounts with 3 in the center having very good overlapping arc of fire.  Same reason why medusa is so awesome.  It's no nonsense build with tons of PD and 2 medium mounts that has good arc of fire and enough vent to actually use all the mounts.

i think i should clarify my previous post a little..

if the current battleship could be thought of like the iowa class of its time or yamato

then i think we could use another ship like the graf spee of the same time frame. a pocket battleship i guess.

here is a nice link

Quote
Commerce raiding by a single ship in the South Atlantic would force the British to adopt convoying over a large area, tying up a disproportionate number of escorts which were in short supply. The mere presence of a single ship would be enough to disrupt merchant traffic. The directive to the Captain of Graf Spee, Kapitan zur See Langsdorf, was 'the disruption and destruction of enemy shipping by all means possible'; he was ordered to commence operations on 25 September.
