Independents can fight each other now.

Makes sense lore-wise, right? The independents and pirates represent all kinds of minor factions—off the top of my head, there's ARC (pirates) and the Charterists (independent) in Askonia, to which the refugees at New Maxios (independent) and the crimelord Kanta (pirates) in Magec are totally unrelated.

I agree, it makes complete sense and is kinda cool. It was just a bit surprising.

Colors of Unidentified and Independents blend easily and hard to tell apart.

Yeah, Independents are a light grey while Unidentified are a dark grey (like the player, I think)

Also destination systems in missions blink up on the tiny, tiny, tiny icon-like map in the top right.

Here's my thought, if you happen to see independent smugglers doing business with pirates(as when they come to pirates' territory), you could just kick their ass hard, and independent wont blame you for attacking their fleet, cos doing business with pirates is not encouraged(or illegal as independent and pirates never get along) and should be "brought to justice". However when they moved away from the pirates' planet far enough and that is considered outside of the pirates' territory, you should not attack them as if you do so there is no evidence to prove they were doing business with the pirates, and independent would treated it as an hostile action.
