One thing I would really love would be to able to pilot a fighter in a fighter wing. I don't know how it can turn out as there are 2 or more fighters in one wing, but fighting with such a ship is something I would personally love. Again, I really cannot say in what way this can be achieved, maybe make special fighters that are a bit more powerful, but only 1 per wing, or even control multiple ships?

The other fighters are given a "fighter escort" order and are considered a different fighter wing?

I have to say, I would very much love it if campaign mode started you out on an even smaller scale, piloting one fighter sized ship, and with only fuel and 1 crew in your cargo.

Obviously I'm thinking forward in the development a bit, as there would need to be better design and gameplay structure to realistically get anywhere with so humble a beginning. Maybe you'd be able to run cargo from planet to planet while avoiding (or engaging) pirates until you work the cash up for a frigate or more fighter wingman buddies.

Anyway, being able to pilot fighters at any point in the game would be pretty cool, imo, so I would be all for this. Implementation should be as easy as making the AI control the rest of the fighters in a wing and follow the ship the player controls, and when the player's controlled fighter dies, control switches to the next living fighter in the wing.

that sounds like the start of X3 and honestly after i played X3 (the original) the first time all the other iterations of that game i have just cheated so i didnt have to spend countless hours trying to claw myself up into a larger craft so that i could have options and do cool things like fight an entire sector if i wanted to.

You won't be able to refit fighters and bombers at all. They're designed/balanced around having a particular set of weapons and would be very broken if you could change it. Which ones you pick for your fleet -out of quite a few that are available- is the choice here, not how they're outfitted.

I'd really like to be able to pilot fighters too. I wouldn't want my fighter to be arbitrarily any more powerful than other fighters though, that cheapens it.

Maybe this can go further. For example, you start off the campaign with a single or more fighter wings, you control one of them. You can get a job of a mercenary, IE: you go the the Hegemony fleet and talk with them, and they hire you as a fighter in their fleet. You would listen to their orders, and join the ranks of the other fighters. Once you worked a lot for them you gathered money, little bit of loot here and there from battles, and the payment which is daily/whatever, you can(eventually) start your own fleet and(maybe) hire mercenaries yourself. This would really be a nice addition to the campaign honestly.

Would be an interesting idea. But I think it would frustrate some beginning players, who would stop playing the game before they get to the real interesting fleet-level tactics. Perhaps set several stages that you can choose to start at (ie, fighter-level, frigate-level, light destroyer-level) and set a decreasing number of "campaign points" or whatever depending on where you start from.

Well they dont have to stop playing. As I said before, even though you start with a small fighter, you can go get a mercenary job. Usually new players explore, so they will most likely try the dialogues and see they can be hired. I'd assume it's much more fun to start from such a low-level, plus fighting a small fighter would be pretty cool.
