Star Nomad II
« on: December 01, 2015, 04:55:58 PM »

Anyone seen the trailer for Star Nomad 2?

Its deceptively similar to StarSector... to the point that it looks a little rip-off-ish, although its a waste-of-time roguelike. Anyone familiar with details of its gameplay?

Edit: Oops I just saw there is an "other games sub-forum", and it seems I am unable to delete my thread. Mods, please help me move this.

Looks much closer to Escape Velocity, with some inspiration from starsector.

People always jump to say any 2d space game is a clone of EV, SPAZ, Space Rangers etc, and now if Starsector is referenced, it means it's a good sign!

Starsector has become a classic before its finished!

Looking at the trailer @ http://store.steampowered.com/app/414950

The combat doesn't look anything like Starsector. It's faster paced but not like EV or SPAZ with their very fast combat.

The interesting part is the trading and smuggling simulation and active conquest.

Careful guys. If it's anything like Star Nomad (the prequel), you should avoid it. I bought SN and it was a terrible mobile port. The game was overly simple with very basic progression. Care not to waste your money. From the trailer it looks very similar to 1. Don't forget about steam refunds.

Hi there, apologies for the first one, I did clearly laid out in the description that it was a simple arcade spacesim.

I posted on this topic in response to a comment on RPS in line with your comment.

I've also updated the FAQ #8 on the forum to clarify even why it's called Star Nomad 2 when it's a completely unrelated and vastly better game: http://steamcommunity.com/app/414950/discussions/0/492379159716050661/

@Kzanu Did you get the refund for Star Nomad? If not, I'll be happy to give you a key to get early access to Star Nomad 2, msg me with your Steam username and I'll send a key your way. :)

As to any suggestion that it's a Starsector rip-off, it is definitely not.

This was ~8 months ago where I first show the early preview, and I addressed these points which were raised.

https://www.reddit.com/r/IndieGaming/comments/2ysaxz/solo_dev_introducing_star_nomad_ii_a_2d_spacesim/

It is great that Starsector is the benchmark, because it is a very good game. I first heard about Starsector ~9 months ago from a friend on Reddit. I instant bought it because I love this genre. However, it was well into my development of this one, the features were already set and predefined. My game did not change at all from its original vision due to me playing Starsector into end-game several times, something which I really enjoyed.

This project was set a long time ago as I got feedback for the first one, gamers wanted "dynamic conquest, capturing and defending systems", they wanted "deep economic simulation", they wanted RPG progression, more than one ship, all of these features were what I wanted as well but back then, I had no idea how to code.

You can find me recommending** Starsector to other gamers on steam forums as well. I often refer to it as the best game of it's genre. But there's room for more great games. :)

Art wise, it kind of reminds me of star ocean style. Like anime fantasy in space.  The ships could look better but it does look pretty neat. Will definitely try :>

You are the first to notice that!

My commissioned artist is a Japanese lady who work with game studios over there. She does beautiful fantasy work. I trusted her fully with the creative freedom for the ship & character designs. :)

I bought the original Star Nomad on release for the price of a cherry ripe and actually put 8 hours into it, which was more then I thought I would and more then my jaded self puts into most games I get. It certainly looked simple but the dev, Halfgeek, was very active in the forums so I thought why not. Turned out to be more fun then I thought, despite the fact that it definitely played like a mobile game. If I remember correctly Halfgeek it was your first foray into game making? I had played right up to a bit past the bit where you have to make a game changing choice then found that I kept losing fights even with a speced out ship, ending up stopping a bit after.

This new game looks interesting, more like halfway Starnomad 1 and Spaz then anything, with more skill involved then the first title, which sounds promising enough if the price is right, aka not like that saint saya game that popped up recently.. I hope I can once again purchase all the flesh dolls in a given system... to sell to laborers for a premium of course  ;)

@JohnDoe
Thanks, I tried to keep it minimalistic. Lots of popup tool-tips with info normally hidden.

@Madao
I had hope some players will enjoy the story for it, due to its simplicity (not because its a mobile port, but simply due to my lack of talent at the time with coding & art). It got really hard half way through the story, you had to master the art of kiting hordes of Battleships.

This one is pretty much what Star Nomad should have been in the first place if I weren't such a noobdev. Battles here are very tactical, fights last a long time. Shield direction and active dog-fighting to evade weapons & missiles are rewarded.

Sounds fun! I wonder how it runs on low end systems though... How are the system requirements vs SS?

I have some beta testers who run it on old Intel duo cores (E6400 2.66ghz) from 2006. On ancient AMD GPU (4850, 5450), reports no lag.

Others run it on more recent i3s with integrated Intel HD4000 60fps smooth.

I wonder if it would run on a Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4500 2.30GHz, 2 Cores with a Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family GPU

It might, I'll message you a free steam key to get the early access to test. :)

I'm more worried about that express chipset graphics since those were horrid in my experience, plus, I use some shaders designed for dx10+ GPUs. Hopefully it works.
