General Discussion / Re: I feel the need

now you just need to edit the game files and remove the speed limit for it :)

All this talk about how hard Radiants are makes me really want to rush to where I was back in 0.91a.

3
Yeah I should probably go for a complete vanilla run through. My 0.91a game was pretty extensively modified (I buffed flux vents and caps, as well as various other weapons like light needler and heavy needler which got shorter range and lower damage but fired continuously like the storm). Made Tachyon lances have shorter duration but similar damage output. Even experimented with infinite range weapons and no caps on max velocity.... that turned out to be just ships zooming around and bouncing around the map ineffectively spraying shots everywhere

I forgot to mention that I uh... increased fleet sizes for all factions so some of the battles I fought ended up being a massive slugfest between 20 or more capitals and dozens of cruisers and frigates on each side. I did field some astrals with longbows and tridents, and drovers with sparks. I personally piloted an Odyssey with plasma cannons, hurricane and xyphos. As for where I've been, mostly just busy with school. Battles were pretty crazy, though my computer could barely run at 30 fps.

I'm a returning 0.91a player who's main strategy against remnants back then was throwing Paragons at them. How does that work out now? I used to play with ~20-30 mods before updating all the mods became too annoying. I did play on 500/1000 battle size though

*first thing I see: Zeus, 4x Paragonn (IX)

One thing is annihilators are highly effective at overwhelming high tech PD and combined with a steady stream of kinetic fire, allows something like an onslaught to keep up pressure

....but never HBL. Or Paladin PD.
Same.
The small Burst Laser is better for a lower cost (both OP and flux), so I always prefer to use small energy mounts for PD wherever gives adequate cover and leave the medium energy mounts for ship-to-ship guns.
Downsizing the mounts is also something that happens a fair bit for medium energy, just because the the HBL is so underwhelming when you want PD.

The Paladin is fairly unique in that it has possibly the most restrictive usage options of any weapon in the game.
It's completely pointless in a hardpoint.
Of the two ships that can realistically mount it in turrets (Paragon & Odyssey), neither can realy use it without seriously undergunning themselves and undermining the whole point of fielding a capital.
If you put it in the Paragon's turrets, you've reduced its firepower by 50%, and restricted what's left to whatever you can point the entire ship at.
If you put it in one of the Odyssey's port turrets you again reduce its firepower by 50%, and if you put it in the starboard turret it's more-or-less useless as that side is facing away from most of the threats.

Paladin is not a bad weapon because it doesn't perform, as it's actually very good at PD. There's just no real opportunity to use it.

Paladin is used in High tech Star Fortress drones :)

Dual Gauss Legion is extremely fragile, overfluxed, and terrible at carrier role (due to limited OP resulting from gauss cannons).

Sure, it's pretty much Talons or other very cheap fighters build.
Yet it still wipes the floor with XIV Legion in a duel, without having to rely on limited ammunition. And shows much better results dueling other capitals as well.
You said it yourself. Gauss legion is better at dueling. I could also argue that XIV Legion can 1v1 paragon using alternating squalls yet Gauss legion can't. Is is a good measure of utility and strength? No, it isn't.

I put dawn Atlas Mk.II it is not a goodCapital, by any means, but it is one powerfull ship when you are suposed to get it, it just need Augumented Drive Field to get to burn 8.

I also put dawn Odyssey, this thing has a combat speed of 70su, which means it can outmacht the speed of half of the ships, in fact the only ships this thing fears are Paragon, which turns as fast as Odyssey turns around it, Radiant, because Remnant teconology, and The Guardian, which is a lone wolf.

I put down Legion and Odyssey - with the Odyssey skating in on the question being "favorite" not "most-used".  I like the Odyssey, but I don't consider it to be a very good ship at the moment.

The Legion, though?  Burn drive works well enough for not being as sluggish as the Paragon, and - unlike the Onslaught - it's relatively easy to set it up with weaponry/fighters that just work without requiring you to carefully manage flux or awkward firing arcs.

The XIV Legion is overall slightly worse than the regular Legion... but it's a lot better at taking down stations; load it up with Hammer Barrage launchers and expanded missile racks.

Why would XIV Legion be worse than regular legion when it has more OP, more flux, and more armor in addition to 0 flux intensive large mounts in exchange for 2 0 flux Large missiles

Legion(XIV) is a very hard to fit, it can match the carrier power of the Astral, but it needs to be in the front line for it to work, and the ship needs perfect conditions for it's guns, while normal Legion can just snipe using Gauss

Dual Gauss Legion is extremely fragile, overfluxed, and terrible at carrier role (due to limited OP resulting from gauss cannons). On the other hand, XIV Legion can protect itself with less flux using large missiles like typhoon sorry, cyclone reaper (no expanded missile racks required) and medium ballistics (HVD, HN, DFC) while also having more OP to put into protection, weapons, flux or fighters as well as being innately tankier

Odyssey. !00% Odyssey. Set it up with MIRV's, Sabot pods, Xyphos, and Tachlances/Plasma cannons and wreck havoc on the enemies rear

For large ballistics I have to give it to the devastator, honestly.  The huge variance in detonation range makes it hideously unreliable for point defense (you know, its apparently intended purpose?) and the damage to shields and armor is underwhelming.  For the OP cost, I'd take literally anything else.  A storm needler, a hellbore--anything.

For medium ballistics, you guessed it: flak cannons.  See Devastator for precisely the same reason.  Dual flaks are only slightly better due to the better coverage.  Those things REALLY need a narrower detonation range by a little bit.  Low damage on an AOE weapon is fine but it needs to TRY to pop somewhere in the same GALAXY as the targets.

Small ballistics?  Hmm.  I usually try to get away from small ships as fast as possible so I honestly don't monitor small weapons as closely.  Have to pass on this one.

Most missiles are really not my bag; the limited ammo turns a lot of ships into VERY limited use vessels and I prefer my boys to be able to duke it out.  I tend to avoid reapers more than anything though; the critically limited shots combined with the likelihood of my lemming AI ships blowing themselves up is just too much to bear.  Fantastic damage yeah, but if you miss...let's just say I don't need that kind of negativity in my life and leave it at that.

Dual Flak always detonates at max range or upon hitting a target. It is probably the BEST PD weapon in the game...

IF by MIRVS, megas is referring to Hurricane MIRV, I find they are extremely useful. They trend to be less susceptible to PD and not all have to hit to be useful. It's enough to do a wide spread of damage to the armour of a cruiser or capital.
Yes, I meant Hurricane, since it is the only MIRV in an unmodded game.  Unboosted MIRVs seem underwhelming.  They do some damage, but not enough to be worth using over Locusts.  A few hits (which is all I get when they do not converge) seem to merely tickle the enemies.  Now, if they converge and most hit, then they do hurt them bad.  Problem is that I need a booster.  I do not take Missile Spec. and adding ECCM means I need to sacrifice something I want more to get it.  Not to mention MIRVs cost 25(?) OP and ECCM costs yet more OP, which Locusts cost only 18 OP, and Locusts are good out-of-the-box with no further investment.  As for defeating PD, Locusts do an even better job because there are so many missiles and they track very well.  The only reason for me to use unboosted MIRVs is for Gauss ships because Locusts do not have enough range for Gauss users.

MIRVs are great on the Odyssey, it comes with ECCM
