... I hate commanding capital ships so I usually let the AI handle them ...
What! I love my capital ships ;)

I find that I'm better than the AI at simultaneously guarding against bomber/torpedo runs and actually doing significant damage with flagships.

4.- Friendly fire avoidance not aggressive enough? In the Nothing Personal mission, I have my Aurora's HILs on autofire most of the time, but my allied Tempests just seem to have a knack for diving in front of them when they're strafing a target.

Although sometimes it's admittedly unavoidable, I think the AI's movement decision should prioritize allied damage avoidance a bit higher when their hull integrity is low: one time, I was about to finish with no ships lost, and a Tempest with very low hull integrity passed right through two of my HIL beams (with its shield pointed in the opposite way, towards the enemy Onslaught) and was disabled :(

Another tip is to watch the order that the AI deploys ships in, and counter that. Usually, the AI sends out fighters and frigates at the very beginning. So, to counter that, do not send your flagship out at the very beginning (unless your flagship is a carrier, or if you can deploy your entire fleet): send anti-fighter craft like the Wasp to make short work of the AI's Talons and Hounds.

Then, when you've captured 2 buoys (or a Comm buoy), deploy your flagship and some lighter craft to counter the destroyers that the AI will then deploy. Finally, after capturing another buoy (or losing some of your initial fleet...), deploy heavier destroyers or torpedo bombers to deal with the AI's flagship that is probably just then entering the field.

That battle order's worked well for me.

As for Coral Nebula, I now consistently get 90-100% (-0-2 fighter wings), so I don't think luck should play a significant role in that mission.

Finally beat it! The key for me was sending in all my Thunder fighters first, and then sending in more fighters to effectively control nearly all the points before sending in my flagship + carrier and destroyers. Then, since the enemy has so few points and is gradually sending in destroyers and their Onslaught one at a time, strike one ship at a time and use torpedos once their shield's down to take them out quickly.

There is already a hold fire button (I am not sure if it was in 0.35a) the default mapping is X. If it wasn't in the .35a build, you will get it as soon as .5a is out, which should be... aah. Hm, I better not start any speculation here. As soon as 5.a is out, which we are hard at work on! Yeah.

Great to hear! Yet another reason to eagerly await 0.5a ;)

Also, thought of another suggestion I forgot to mention:
3.- Access to Settings During Battle
In the Esc menu, it'd be nice to be able to access the Settings control panel to tweak controls. More a convenience feature, really.

I do hope someday for transcendence screensaver style battles.  :) I'm pretty sure they do duke it out. It's just rare.

Yeah, I realized; but usually it's just a quick skirmish with a fighter. It'd be cool to see something Battleships Forever-esque, where a bunch of ships duke it out on the main screen   ;D

Amazing work, Fractal Softworks team! I'm really, really, really impressed with how the game is so far. There's already a ton of replay value just for the battles themselves.

From my few days of playing Starfarer, though, I do have two quick suggestions. Both are pretty minor, though.

1.- Hold Fire Button: Yes, I know it's possible to hold fire effectively by taking manual control of all the weapon systems, but I think it's a really useful command for some strategies, and would also help respond to near-overloads.

2.- More Battles on the Main Screen: Only ships flying by? Pfttt! It'd be nice to see some small sorties play out on the main menu screen, or at the very least, have the AI ships use their point defense against the rocks that they're currently flying into. Overall, an understandably minor point though.

While swimming laps, I did think of a couple others, but I've since forgotten them. I'll post in this thread again if I think of any more :)

General Discussion / The Last Hurrah
« on: February 04, 2012, 08:09:57 PM »
First, I'd like to say that I'm definitely not regretting buying the alpha two days ago. This game is just as amazing as I thought it would be, reading the blog, poring over the ship and weapon descriptions, and seeing TotalBiscuit's video!

I've since beaten all nearly all the missions with an over 70% score... except The Last Hurrah. For some reason, I just can't nail it, what with the lack of torpedo bombers/bombers on my side and the Onslaught + assault destroyers on the other.

Any tips from the more experienced? Thanks! :)
