General Discussion / Ship Editor
« on: March 08, 2012, 12:09:26 PM »
OK, I get the basics on how to use it, but I don't know how to add a complete ship to the game.  For example, if I wanted to add a; low tech fighter armed with 2, single harpoon missiles mounted on the side with a light needler up front?  All weapons are hardpoints with 5 degree turn radius, and the fighter comes in 4-ship flights.  Any helps hints on how to do this, I'd be honored!

Suggestions / Orbital Station Ideas
« on: March 06, 2012, 06:39:20 PM »
OK, I've noticed that the Orbital station gets quiet crowed with weapons, supplies, fuel and personnel.  Maybe the Orbital station can have it's supplied reduced every time something happens to it?  For example, if a Tri-Tachyon fleet raid the station, depending on the size of the fleet, will steal an amount of supplies, fuel, weapons, and personnel, and maybe even a few ships.  When a Hegemony fleet returns to the Orbital Station after a battle, it will take supplies, fuel, and personnel.  This will help control the amount of items in the Orbital Station at one time and also add a bit of realism to the game.

Suggestions / Different Fleets
« on: March 06, 2012, 06:31:38 PM »
OK, I've always wanted to control multiple fleets at the same time.  Why not?  The Hegemony seem to be capable of it, as do the Tri-Tachyon.  When you make a new fleet (based out of ships from your main fleet), you have the option to take control of that new fleet.  If you choose not to take control (or do choose to take control, either way will work with the next phase) you can order your fleet to go somewhere (e.g. "patrol" an area") or have them dock at a specific point, such as any of the planets, asteroids, or even the star Corvus.  They will function just as any other fleet, but when they encounter an enemy fleet (or an enemy encounters them,  :o), a popup will occur, telling you the fleet has been attacked and the captain in charge of the fleet has asked you for permission to attack, defend, escape, or leave.  Any of these options may be chosen, but be wary; you cannot control the fleet if it goes into battle.  The battle will be played out as if you choose your second-in-command to do it.  You can also merge your fleets.  If a fleet is too far away to merge, it will travel to you as fast a possible with the most direct route.  Any ideas?

Suggestions / Officer Suggestion
« on: March 01, 2012, 12:28:42 PM »
OK, no news of anything about officers lately, so I might as well post this.
Officers are only made though combat situations, and they determine the ship's behavior when either on auto-control or not being controlled by the player at all.  First off, the officers have personalities (mentioned on the front page of the website).  Each personality will determine what the ship will do when it sees an enemy.

Personalities
For example, a cautious officer may not take part in direct combat, rather providing fire support.  This can be a bonus to a ship such as the buffalo cruiser.  A bold officer may charge into battle when it sees a worthy opponent, but he/she tends to attack ships too big for it's size.  Bold officer may also make combat maneuvers other officers may not be able to do, such as turning to avoid a missile instead of letting the shields absorb it.  Suicidal captains do just that, they charge into battle with no idea whatsoever on what to do, they may even just stand there shooting the enemy's shields without activating their own.  This is effective vs retreating or escaping ships, as they won't let it go without it taking some damage.  There are probably other officer personalities out there, but these are just examples.

All officers also impart a 10% boost to all ship parts, which include: speed, accuracy, range, and maneuverability.  Each additional officer will impart half the last bonus. e.g. 2 officers will impart 15%, 3 will impart 17-18% and 4 officers will impart 18-20%.

Number & Influence of Officers
There may be more than one officer per ship, depending on the amount of crew required.  There may be, perhaps, 1 officer for every 100 men on a ship.  If there is less than 100 crew for one ship, there can still be one officer, but no more than one.  (e.g.-if a ship has 100 men, it can acquire an officer.  If it has more than 150 men, it can acquire another officer.  100 men to start, needs 50 more for another, etc.).  If a ship has say, 300 men and 3 officers, each officer can influence the other to bend to their will.  If there were 2 bold officers and 1 cautious officer, most of the time it would be a bold maneuver the ship will take instead of a cautious one.

Creation & Revealing Personalities
Officers may only be acquired through combat, which means no purchasing them from the orbital station!  Take care of ships who have officers, but remember their personalities and use them to your advantage.  Speaking of personalities, each officer's personality is only reveled after combat (e.g. an officer is created after a battle, but his personality will be revealed at the start of the next battle he takes part in.  The ship with the officer must be sent out and not in reserve to reveal it).  This gives you a cloud of doubt before a battle, a little food for thought... ;D

Modding / Boarding Mod Idea?
« on: February 29, 2012, 02:40:22 PM »
Yea, that's what the title says.  When and if you board ship (with this mod, if it ever gets made), the background may change to what appears to be the inside of a ship.  You gain control of all the marines you have and can send them out like fighters, a few soldiers to each "squad" (if this is applied, the price of each "marine" you can get at the orbital station would go up).  During a boarding fight, there would be no momentum for the marines.  They would usually be armed with pulse lasers, machine guns, or maybe even a single bomb from the standard bomb bay. ;)The general mechanics of Starfarer would still be present, such as shields and their effects (supercharged, not being able to fire when overcharged).  Probably one of the most suggested things to be added to the game, why not a mod?

Suggestions / Faction Hostility Settings
« on: February 27, 2012, 06:28:37 PM »
OK, I've noticed that you can only become "Neutral" or "Hostile" with any of the 4 factions out there.  Is there any way to get higher?  Well, maybe if each faction had a "sworn enemy", like the Hegemony to the Tri-Tachyon are, you could improve your standing with each faction?
For example, you start off a neutral to all forces except the Pirates.  If you attack the pirates, your standing with the Independent Faction will go up.  If you manage to destroy one or two fleets of any size, your standing with the Independent Faction will go up to "Friendly".  Nothing happens at friendly standing for all factions.  When you take out more enemy fleets, you standing with the Independent Faction will rise to "Allied".  When this occurs, the Independent Faction will send you a "Mercenary Escort," which includes perhaps a destroyer and a fighter/interceptor.  Each Faction would have it's own special "ability" once you reach the Allied standing.  This also includes the Pirate Faction, which follows the same rules.  The "sworn enemies" would be:
Hegemony and Tri-Tachyon
Independent and Pirates

If you didn't want to read that blob of text, here's a nice shortened version XD:

5 standings for each faction: Hostile, Suspicious, Neutral, Friendly, Allied
Sworn enemies are:
Hegemony and Tri-Tachyon
Independent and Pirates

Attacking one faction will increase standing with opposite faction, and vice-versa.
Getting to "Allied" standing will grant the player a special unit/ability/something else unique to that faction.

C&C welcome!

P.S.-Someone please tell me how to pronounce Hegemony and Tri-Tachyon, I've no idea. ???

Suggestions / Hunter-Destroyer Class
« on: February 25, 2012, 05:27:27 PM »
OK, when I was trying to kill this massive Onslaught class battleship, I thought of something: why not have a ship specificity designed to kill capital ships and their little brothers?  Why not have a hunter-destroyer class?  It might be armed with plenty of reaper torpedoes, of course, to effectively kill the monster of a ship.  It would have sub-standard armor and shields, though, to make up for it's massive payload and speed (speed of a destroyer).  It would also have a few flak cannons or PD lasers to ward off enemy missiles, though not enough to protect itself effectively from enemy heavy fighters and bombers.  It would be, of course, shaped like a submarine, maybe the infamous German U-boat?  Might be the size of an Aurora-class cruiser, but a bit thinner and more streamlined.  Thoughts, C&C?

Suggestions / Better Start Menu
« on: February 18, 2012, 06:48:21 AM »
OK, I've found that the hints and tips bar near the bottom of the screen is quiet helpful, to be honest.  Some things I've never known about the game by just reading about it were there.  But maybe there could be little battle scenes (the ships that fly occasionally into the screen) for each hint/tip?  Might make it a bit more enjoyable to see what you have to do, an example.

Modding / Mod Suggestion - Age of Sail
« on: February 13, 2012, 12:31:06 PM »
OK, no idea where to put this, but back to my topic:
The first thing I though of when I saw the game was, of course, massive battles of fleets in space battling it out!  The second thins I thought of was the Ship of the Line.  Those huge naval battles fought right here on Earth.  So, why not make an Age of Sail mod?  Now, I'm terrible at Java and anything related to it, so I thought it might be a good idea to present it to the forums.  This mod would basically turn the game into a naval game, to add some color the the darkness of space.  Any idea on this?

General Discussion / Purchacing the Game
« on: January 25, 2012, 01:41:05 PM »
OK, I just want to clarify this, but is this a one-time buy, like Minecraft?  Whereas, you buy the game in Beta,Alpha, etc... version and you get all future updates, including the full release, for free?  The info on the purchase panel wasn't clear enough for me.

For example, I buy Starfarer for $10 now, will I get the full game when it releases without having to pay more?
