I pretty much never use Tac Laser, and why would I spend so much OP just to have an IR Pulse Laser but colored green...

EDIT: Guess it becomes better when your fleet synergizes around beam spam, but that playstyle is mindnumbingly boring to me.

Could it use a few more ships where it works well? Yeah, probably. But I'm not entirely sure what those hypothetical ships would look like. Maybe something kindof like the shrike but with a more general-purpose mobility system and extra small turrets instead of the medium? Maybe? I dunno.
Just spitballin a quick idea even if it's not super related to the thread.

Something with a similar setup of the Odyssey could see use of IR Pulse Lasers, Gigacannons and Paladins. So bunch of small energy mounts, zero mediums and then a couple of large energies so that it makes low flux weapons more desirable.

Odyssey is seriously nice with a bunch of IR Pulse Lasers but it kinda switched to a semi-missile ship with a few changes. Switched large energy to synergy, removed the tight convergence point, much more speed potential but also weaker shields. It wants to use missiles. And it also has fighters. So something without all of those boons should be ideally motivated to have a unique setup of weapons.

And for the love of god please no more "move only forward" ship systems, half ot the roster has that ability.

Back to the main topic now: IR Pulse Lasers have good DPS for their size but horrible damage per shot, you know what's the complete opposite? It's Gigacannon, bingo! Match made in heaven yet there isn't a single ship where this loadout makes sense.

I put 2 on my Scarabs alongside an AMB. And in rare circumstances where I can't for the life of me find a decent medium energy, then I use them to help with shield damage on ships like Fury, Shrike, Aurora, etc.

But as I said in that thread, if you've got larger weapons that aren't missiles, you'll probably end up using those for assault. Smalls end up being left for PD duty or support. And it's impossible to compete with AMB for damage.

I don't find any problems with that, there isn't a single ship in the game where you're forced to only use IR Pulse Lasers, you always have other options. Medium energies have amazing armor punchers, and if you really need an extra bite, AMB is amazing.

Ships that have ONLY small energies (excluding missile slots) are Scarab and Omen unless I'm missing something. Scarab is great not matter what weapons you put on it, and AMB is a no brainer. Omen on the other hand is all about the ship system, it doesn't care for better small options.

So yeah I'm fine with small energies being left in a support role with one strike option. Artificially boosting stats doesn't seem like a good idea (you can argue that AMB can be excluded from the range buff, but I don't like having such wonky mechanics on a hullmod).

EDIT: For what it's worth, I disagree with Ion cannon being grouped with good weapons, and calling IR Pulse bad, they're both mid.

I used HSA once when it was first introduced, and then never again. If someone is having fun with it then cool, for me it's the Mudskipper MkII of hullmods.

My man still doesn't get the concept of discussion forums, this isn't your personal diary.

You write lengthy posts on every other topic here, make suggestions, demand nerfs, argument with other users. And then as soon as someone throws an argument back at you, you fall back to "ok sorry bro I was just giving an idea, whatever". That's extremely annoying and after a while people won't be responding to your remarks. There's a saying in my language about thinking it out first in your head, and then speaking, which really applies here.

This honestly has the vibe of prank videos where the annoying people just yell out "it's just a prank haha why you mad?". As that's some sort of ultimate defense against everything.

So unless you really really think something is broken strong or utterly weak, don't come writing a dozen posts where other people engage with you and then dismiss everything you previously said because you haven't thought it through.

I hate forced meta change balance patches.

Hell I've seen more Executors in player fleets than Onslaughts. Tired of seeing "nerf something that finally works" posts.

I chuckled at that question since from the wording "involved" seems to specify people who are active on forums, discord, reddit, and such about Starsector. But people who aren't browsing topics about it online wouldn't have even stumbled upon that poll in the first place.

Big fan of Dual Autopulse + Dual Ion Pulser + Dual Mining Blasters.  Float around the flanks and delete anything that's causing problems for the rest of the fleet.
Using literally the same build. Nova is perfect for s-modded Expanded Mags setup. Don't even need missiles.

It was my flagship in the 2nd campaign and it's pretty amazing for player piloting. AI usage varies A LOT, still fun to have in a fleet.

It's hilarious to see like 30 different categories for basically "I saw the dev tweet". Although it's not like Histidine knew Alex would make a post about it.

And I still stand by my opinion, if players had the ability to send ships wherever they want, they'd be more frustrated, not less.

If AI is doing something seemingly "funky", it's 95% of the time for a reason, that 5% is either a bug, or just derping out. Of course it's not perfect, but it's damn better than in any other game I played.

I wish there was a "kill AI" button just so that it proves all such people wrong. By kill AI I mean they literally won't do anything unless you tell them to, so yeah just like RTS.

Don't even have to explain how that would be a 10x WORSE experience unless you plan to play with 0.1 game speed or just have 2 mega capitals in your fleet.
