Bug Reports & Support / Re: Xpadder not working?
« on: June 13, 2017, 09:47:58 AM »
I have tried to Joy2Key, it's ok but I really prefer Xpadder. Game Profiler is even better but it's kind of expensive at $25..

But actually, it would appear that I need to run Xpadder as admin for some reason now. The other games I tested I don't need to but all of the sudden with SS I have to now. It's been awhile since I played 072 so I don't even know when the change really took effect as I only just discovered it as I wanted to try 081.

Either way I don't care, I figured it out and as much as I wanted to be productive today looks like I'm just gonna be playing SS for the next 8 hours, sorry world(not sorry)  ;D ;D ;D

Ok, no worries. I'm sure I'll figure out what it is at some point. Thanks  :)

This is terrible. I have been playing this game this way for years. So weird becasue I tested a number of other games I use Xpadder with and they all work fine. Is there any way to delete the registry entries? I tried uninstalling and still the previous version isn't working with Xpadder. All it does is give input, do you think it has something to do with Java? I love this game and really want to try out the new version  :-\ Thanks Alex

Are there any settings saved in another location other than the install directory? Because now Xpadder doesn't even work in the older versions so I'm assuming there are shared config files or something

Bug Reports & Support / Xpadder not working?
« on: June 10, 2017, 10:12:46 PM »
This might sound weird but I tend to play a lot of games with a combination of gamepad in my left hand and mouse in my right. It's just a habit I got into a long time ago and it's useful in a lot of games. Using an analog stick a instead of WASD works much better for me.

Anyway, Starsector is one of those games I play like this. I usually use Xpadder and I've never had a problem in any of the previous versions but for some reason it doesn't work in the new update. Everything works fine when I open Xpadder before I launch but when I'm in game nothing from my gamepad seems to register. Funny though if I alt-tab out, it goes back to working perfectly, mimicking the mouse etc.. but then stops when I tab back in. I've never even seen behavior like this when using Xpadder over the years. Any idea of what it could be or how to fix it?

Mods / Re: [0.7.2a] Underworld 1.0.2

It says in OP that this is Nexerelin supported but it is not showing as an option to start in the faction. I have also not come across any if the ships, weapons etc.. but I really haven't explored much yet. Is this not a playable faction?

Space Rangers HD
I've been just recently trying to get into this one. I must admit, I'm a little overwhelmed lol. Is there any good way to get a nice start? I don't know where to begin, haha.

Nothing really compares in the "spaceship fleet combat" department.
Starsector combat has the deepest and most smooth experience out of all of them. (if played on even footing as the AI)

Yeah, I guess this is really why SS is so great, the combat is really where it's at. Some good sounding suggestions though, I will see what sticks, thanks everyone!

General Discussion / Recommend similar games?

I absolutely love SS and it is one of my all time favorites. If I had it on Steam I'm sure it would tell me I have 300+ hours but even after you have tried all the mods over and over, you can get bored. Combined with the absolute snails pace at which this game progresses leaves me wanting. No offense to Alex because this game is incredible but I've seen many one man developed games start and finish in the amount of time Starsector/Starfarer has been in development. I'm not sure if time/money is a factor but I guarantee if this was on Steam in Early Access the $$$ would be rolling in. Nobody even knows about this game and it's the best game nobody is playing. I've heard all the reasons/arguments as to why Alex hasn't gone that route just yet so you can spare me all that, but in the meantime does anyone know of any other games that might scratch that SS itch?

I have played plenty of space sims but SS has that special something that many other spaces games don't. I've tried Weird Worlds, SPAZ, FTL etc.. but if anyone has suggestions, I am all ears, thanks!

Well outside of official support I think my setup would probably be better than the Steam controller. Seems like no one has given it a good review at this point. For games like Civ I can see how the weird circle mouse pad thingy might be ok but for action like SS I'm prob best sticking with my Xpadder config.

Partial support is certainly better than nothing. I only use the game pad for battles. But yes the moving of the shield independently from where you are aiming is the only major issue. I am pretty comfortable with my control scheme but then again I am only holding the gamepad in my left hand and using the mouse in my right. My setup is this:

Lt- shield toggle
Lb- strafe
L stick- wasd
Dpad and L stick button for weapons 1-5

If xpadder had a better mouse spring feature I would probably not need to even use the mouse at all in battles. Many pc gamers said gamepad support would be impractical for Terraria but then it went to consoles and sold a zillion copies. Just saying, some people would sacrifice a little of the finer controls to be able to kick back and play with a gamepad sometimes.

I would really love to see gamepad support. Or at least partial support. I have been pc gaming ever since the days of the x486 but I typically prefer a gamepad for most of my games and in fact for SS I use Xpadder and a 360 controller. I hold my gamepad in my left hand and my mouse in my right when I do battles.

The top down twin-stick action in SS just begs for use of a gamepad imo and I would really love to see it implemented if possible.

Has anyone actually gotten this to work using all the 'compatible' factions listed in the OP? I am getting an error reading:

JSONObject["logo"] not found

And I have all the linked factions from the OP installed. Anyone have the same problem?

EDIT: The author of the ORI mod has an outdated link in the OP for his mod. The current and compatible version is in a post towards the end of the thread...

This fix doesn't seem to work for me, and it's definitely running the 64bit version but after a while of playing I won't be able to load my saves. I am allocating 6g, surely that is enough to run SS with a ton of mods??

Oh thanks, is this game free? I've only ever downloaded my copy from my purchase receipt
