Fan Media & Fiction / Re: Hope and Duty - Chapter 2 is up
« on: September 17, 2012, 06:07:46 PM »
Lots of intriguing content on this subforum, and I regret that more players don't usually take the time to see it.

I don't generally comment upon game-based fiction, but I must make an exception here. I look forward to more of this tale. The way you paint a scene is interesting; nicely done.

It is not at all easy to write convincing fanfic (regardless of the game used as a source, some of the genre reads like, well, nevermind ::) ), but you skillfully dodged several bullets while doing so. No small task to make us find a way to care about a character, but you have assuredly done it. Waiting for Chapter 3 now. :)

just a simple kitbash I've been working on. The Beagle

Cute little guy! I just want to take him off of the leash and let him run around the park. ;D

Indeed.

Cypher, not only are essentially contentless posts in general a waste of time and subject to deletion at will, but bumping/necro'ing threads is a good way to receive an official warning. Kindly cease doing that.

OK back to Space Pixels 1000 now.

Confine the LEGO talk to a PM conversation or a new LEGO-specific thread on the Off-Topic subforum, please. Thanks folks. :)

GUNINANRUNIN's avatar looks very cool to my eye. I wish that the darker areas did not lose so much detail, though. I'd give it 8/10.

But back to the point, is that sandbox mentioned in the quote possible?  I'm sure we'd all enjoy it to some extent. :)

I'm with you, Soldier; I'd enjoy that feature a great deal. Hopefully it is not heading on the same unfortunate course that the Munitions Ships were just revealed to be.

Appreciation of my very old-school avatar is duly noted, but let's make a greater effort to remain on-topic, please.

I can't say I'm too keen on the karma system, mostly due to bad experiences with forums using it. They tend to cultivate an atmosphere of "karma-seekers" (or insert other, less flattering word there ;)), so to speak. Then again, no system is perfect, and there's nothing against combining the upvoting with time-spent

Oh, I hear you loud and clear about [-discreet cough-] "karma-seekers". ;) Though I find that's somewhat more of a failing of human nature itself than a technical/mechanical failing of the forum's chosen framework.

Any artificial online substitute for direct face-to-face contact is going to be imperfect, and the trick is finding the system/systems that are the least imperfect choice for the kind of member population that a given web forum consists of. The more data one has to work with for comparison and contrast when a member is deciding if a fellow member knows what he's talking about, the better.

That assumes such data-gathering mechanisms don't create more problems than their existence solves, though. Much depends on the maturity of the average member of any such site, and what they wish to get from participation at said site. As you alluded to, petty personal politics and ego-inflation tend to make an unusable hash out of some karma systems. What works well for members at a forum dedicated to, say, cultural discussion of Japan's Tokugawa period and the shogun-instigated decline of the samurai class, might not work as well if you ported it over (unchanged) for the use of members at a Twilight fanfic forum [-shudder-].

Suggestions / Re: Different colored UIs for ships of different epochs
« on: September 11, 2012, 05:12:40 PM »
The idea is cool, but I'd rather have different colors on the UI reflect status rather than ship type. I like how when you have a ship targeted the UI changes to blue when the ship is disabled.

In the future, I hope to see the armor status have a few different colors to give you a more precise indication of how much armor you have, and have a color that lets you know when specific weapons are disabled.

This game absolutely needs disabled weapons to turn orange or something.

Something like that would indeed be helpful to a busy commander in an intense fight.

Since time rather than how vocal you are is more of an indicator of how experienced you are with the way the forum goes.

In general, I strongly agree with you. However, the "time" stat does not provide a airtight defense against being fooled by people with waaaaay more free time than good sense, though. But in conjunction with upvotable karma and comparison with a sampling of a given member's posts, it can help one decide for oneself if that person is an asset to that website or not.

Or no ranks at all, to prevent people from spamming posts just to get a higher forum ranking.  8)
Who does that? That's just stupid

Agreed that it's pointless and stupid, but it's also more common that you think.

Alas, I have neither diamonds, nor private army. In fact, I've not even got a decent rank. Must...buff...post count.... must...enlarge...e-peen!

Just make sure not to spam unnecessary content :)

Moderator note: agreed in full.

OT: I think more ranks are not necessary, but a larger gap between them would be cool. Admiral at 1k or 2k or something.

That would be nice. It would help defuse the [pokemon]gotta get 'em all![/pokemon] mentality, too. ;D

Ensign: 0 posts
Lieutenant: 25 posts
Commander: 100 posts
Captain: 250 posts
Admiral: 500 posts

Seems a little to short of a gap, i mean i joined this forum..what less then a month ago? and im almost captain and i have an average post number of like 3-5 posts per day.

Well stated, ValkyriaL. Personally, I don't think too highly of forum ranks or total post count -- fun bits of fluff, but nothing more -- user reputation is much more helpful when deciding who to put your credence into.

Ranks also can become a problem when combined with the kind of people who are so attention-hungry or ego-driven that it gets used as a perceived easy road to respectability. While many folks pay little or no attention to such stats, some of those that do (wrongly) take it seriously can be a potential problem.

Even more useful than unofficial user reputation (which can only be gleaned accurately through somewhat long-term observation on a forum) is publicly-displayed "karma" which can be upvoted by other members. That separates the wheat from the chaff right quick...

What I'm referring to is a part of one's profile in each post you make that includes a number which abstracts the approx. percentage of a person's posts which are helpful to the community as a whole. Some websites I've stumbled upon over the years use such a system and I applaud it. It doesn't have to replace the total post count stat; but even as a supplement to it, this sort of thing would be beneficial to the forum experience. Only psionic powers would be more helpful than this, but I don't see that being feasible anytime soon. ;) Until then, I guess we'll all just muddle though as best as we can.

Norway! Beautiful country! (Dont come in the winter)

(Not that i live there or anything.)

Yes, Norway is beautiful. For example, Queen Maud Land is a fascinating tourist destination. It's not too crowded, although getting there is a bit of a chore.

Derp belongs in off-topic.

Indeed it does.

The links are useful, though, so the thread lives but with a lock.

Interesting stuff. Personally I'm hoping for a soft-cap. I don't like hard-caps.

I'm of the same opinion re: caps.

Also quite interested in the extent of how player-moddable the entire skills framework will be.
