Modding / Ship sprite editor

something just came to me when looking through what sprite people made.
i see a lot of battle ship forever and there is nothing wrong with that,
but they all seem similar.
what i was thinking about is something that works like bsf but more start farer like (vanilla).
i am no coder so making an editor is not something i can do,
but what about just making one massive picture with all parts present in starfarer vanilla.
so just disassemble all the sprites and put them in one picture.
when someone wants to make a spite they just take a couple of parts
put them in a few layers and build there sprites.
would this be a good idea?
and is there anyone there wo is good in kitbashing (so also disassembling)?
