Suggestions / Remember zoom level
« on: March 28, 2012, 12:38:34 PM »
Have the program remember my zoom level for when I enter combat so I don't have to zoom out every time.

It's the little things that help in little ways.

Perhaps an idea to add to standard options, your preferred zoom level.

Suggestions / Planet raiding
« on: March 28, 2012, 12:05:49 PM »
Not sure if it's a good idea.

Right now the only point you for having marines is capturing other ships after battle. That's all good and well but they could have another use.

Planet raiding. Hover over a planet and choose to raid.
Select what to raid for, ships, weapons, supplies, fuel, personal, anything you can get in-game.
Will of course pose a significant risk to your fleet as well as your marines, ships could be lost on mission.
Chance of success depending on crew level/ship speed/marine and crew capacity on raiding ship versus marines needed to pull of the raid/how much your attempting to haul in versus the raiding ship's cargo capacity.

Since the only way to get ship in the late stage is by attacking fleets this could be an alternative, risky but rewarding.

Good idea?

Suggestions / Better AI control (MOOT POINT: IGNORE)
« on: March 28, 2012, 11:45:35 AM »
;D I know, I know. I still have to suggest this though. I know it's hard but please keep improving this amazing game!!

I have the fastest possible fleet you can have in the game with a lot of ships and I usually end up outnumbering my opponent say 2 or 3 to one until their numbers have bin reduced to one or two.
The thing is that this is where the chaos starts to happen, it's quite glorious to see really, firing down on the biggest ships with your entire armada of beam weapons. Thing is that we kind of get in the way of each other, especially those tiny frigates. I'm just glad I can't shoot my own fighter-level craft.

Another thing is the steering of the computer on by own biggest ships, man those thing don't give a crap! Just plowing throe your own ships sometimes, once even seen the thing go sideways with it's fat ass plowing throe my own fleet of frigates, destroyers and a butt-load of wracks. Quite hilarious though I'm hoping it stays a one time thing.

(not like my own steering is much better though  ::) although I'm getting better at it, the computer isn't)

The tiny frigate get the worst of it, but it's their own fault, with them moving right throe my already firing weapons of death. Takes quite a bit of skill to keep track of all the little buggers.

For some strange reason weapon group 2 cannot be set to autofire.

Unless you push the button for autopilot which turns on the autofire for all weapon modes, at which point you will be unable to unset the autofire for weapon group 2.

I've read somewhere that all groups are supposed to be able to have normal autofire capabilities so this is probably a bug.

*Lowering of point cost of a weapon of your choice across your fleet: example, choose tactical laser and all tactical lasers you install across your fleet cost 1 or 2 points less.
*Same can be done with the ships systems: example, choose augmented engines and all augmented engines will cost 10% or 20% less on all of your ships.
*Expanding use of slots. Say choose a weapon that you like and have it be able to mount on slots of a type it normally doesn't allow. for example choosing a tactical laser and allowing it to be installed on a small ballistics/missile slot in addition to it's energy slot. Again fleet wide and only for the weapon you choose.

This would allow for fleet wide specialization without it costing a prohibiting amount of points so as to still allow for either more options or better weapons.
I hope it's not overpowered.

Not sure how to represent it lore wise though, perhaps character funds research/trains his engineers/technicians to focus on these things which allows for this kind of expertise/specialization in his fleet?

(I of course suggest this because I'm a speedster in-game, my entire fleet works off of the same build that has quite the augmentations that cost an arm and a leg. And while this works great most of the time it is quite prohibiting on my weapon systems, which your really start to notice when my ENTIRE fleet firring all it got at a paragon and all I see is it's flux level slowly dropping down to normal levels while all my fleet is rising to critical levels. I'm still further refining my build but I could really use more points to spent to be able to afford some missile slots. The worry I have is that what I suggest is quite over powered as I'm already doing pretty well against all of the biggest ships. Nothing else can touch my entire fleet.)

Guess I can't do a spoiler button on this forum, to bad. Hope this works then.

I've bin having some pretty bad graphics issue ever since my last update session (running linux crunchbang (debian)

Most of it is pretty harmless and I seem to still be able to save my game, just random color changes, weird bloom effects when ship blow up off screen, while in battle at the tactical map giving orders has either text missing or the icons that hover over the stations you set to capture are weird. All this does not stop the game from functioning though and you can still safely save your game.

But there is some bad stuff going on as well, sometimes I get a weird color change to purple and suddenly my whole machine slows to a crawl, even outside of the game. It my look like it's freezing up but its just going really slowly. I checked my CPU cores cycles/usage and those where going crazy with one of the four maxing out most of the time (they where still able to switch use between cores), sometimes even two cores where at max. Ram usage seems to still be unaffected though. It does not cause the game to crash nor my system. Everything is just really slow and given enough time I can force java to kill turning everything back to normal.

While any of these things can happen at any time it seems worse while I engage big hedgemony (spelling?) fleets. Alto this may just be coincidence.

AAAAARGH!! My log file is 7 mb in size, I'm not allowed to attach it. Does anyone have a good idea how to include it anyway?

Not sure if this helps but here is my linux update history. of the past few days.

While having lots of weapons in a single weapon group and your firing them only the weapons that can actually fire in the arc where your pointing your mouse will fire, this is the case when you have them on linked fire mode.

This is not the case while you have the same set up in alternating fire mode where all weapons fire regardless of wither they can actually get where you are pointing.

This wastes a lot of flux and endangers your own ships that are nearby.

It's a real problem for me since my fleet tactics depend on outnumbering my opponent, I can't do this while is going on.

Suggestions / Remembering weapon settings when you enter battle.
« on: March 28, 2012, 09:18:28 AM »
It would be nice if the game remembered which weapon groups you had set to autofire so you don't have to do this every time you enter into battle.

After you've clicked on a planet to follow on the travel map and you arive, while you re hovering over the planet and slowly keep up with it, it looks as if your speed in the upper left is freaking out like a bug or error or graphics glitch. This I think is not truly the case. If you pause the speed displays as normal. I think it's caused by rapid speed changed between a speed in the single and two digit numbers. This causes the numbers to jump to left and to the right to fast to see.

It's only a minor annoyance. But it still looks bad.

PS: I'm running on Linux crunchbang (debian) in case it matters.
