General Discussion / Re: this is the greatest game ever made

It's probably the best space sandbox and arcady space combat game yes.

Not sure why you listed a bunch of 4X games and what they have to do with Starsector. Master of Orion is in an entirely different genre with no basis for a comparison to be made whatsoever.

A more interesting question would be: which is the better sandbox game, Starsector or Mount & Blade: Warband? Dunno.

Dead? No. Last time I launched the exe the game worked just fine.

Proper expansions are so much work though. Much easier to sell some horse armor DLC.

Heh, yeah I had to stop when I saw a fleet with some ships I was coveting (pirate revenge fleet with Castigator (P)s) to increase the fleet cap. Ended up having my ass kicked anyway!
I just took the salvage skill so you get lot's of ships with a single D-mod, which is nothing. Great way to play around with ships you would usually ignore.

INB4 a 0.10.0 after 0.9.5
You're probably joking but I see every other person make this mistake. Adding more zeroes after the decimal point doesn't change the number. So for example 1.5 and 1.5000000 is the same thing. Sorry if I seem nitpicky but I've had teachers who thought wrong and spread false information.
To further nitpick, those two numbers are different.
1.5 can be anywhere from 1.45 to 1.55.
1.5000000 can only be from 1.49999995 to 1.50000005.
I don't get the joke.

A software version isn't a decimal number, it's a tuple of 3 integers (https://semver.org/). You increment your major version when it makes sense not because you "ran out" of minor version numbers. Though sometimes the minor version is used as a decimal fraction to indicate progress towards completion.

General Discussion / Re: Can Starsector run on more CPU cores?
« on: October 27, 2019, 12:59:47 PM »
However, since Java is only below php in awfulness as a programming language, I don't think we'll live to see Starsector running multi-cored.

What has Java's fugliness as a language have anything to do with adding concurrency to Starsector? The core library has all the concurrency primitives you need easily accessible and the JVM is perfectly happy to run lot's of threads. Unlike, for instance, horrible hackjobs like Python where the interpreter just chokes on them, forcing the entire ecosystem to use subprocesses like it's 1979.

Like Thaago said, it's mainly a question of examining the code to find independent sections that can be parallelized and wrapping it all in the correct sync primitives to maintain correctness. And then spend a year debugging it.

General Discussion / Re: Hyperspace Storms: Unfun or Necessary?
« on: October 27, 2019, 10:18:14 AM »
Some fun. Stare at the screen and occasionally click to correct course. Or plough through and get blown a couple map grids off course. It'd be much better if hyperspace was empty and travel time was several times faster in real time (or at least configurable). Even if speed was unchanged I would at least prefer to travel in peace so I can think about stuff instead of doing annoying busywork.

Alternatively go full 40K and fill hyperspace with demons and unspeakable horrors. Would couple as a great lore explanation for endless pirate fleets - they're all chaos worshippers and have heavy industry in the warp.

Playing a salvage only (no ship buying) run is very fun. Usually coupled with a pirate run.

isn't very obviously trying to throw things in the player's way deliberately, is Star Control 2.

General Discussion / Re: Second playthrough mods
« on: October 26, 2019, 07:46:43 AM »
Adding mod factions only makes the sector feel more alive and gives you more toys to play with. Most of the mods are very high quality and in my opinion have better flavor and more interesting ships that most vanilla stuff. The only downside to installing a ton of mods is making the weapon selection list longer to scroll through.

I would have gotten bored with the game long ago if not for the amazing mods.

There are more in mods. Diable, Blackrock and DME all have one.
Legions can be very nice with some good bombers, I especially like the XIV version. The point of them is to sit on the front line and slug it out while the bombers can do rapid fire bombing runs.

is this deviation acceptable and top-meta is not necessary to beat the hardest challenges the game (and mods) has to offer yet? Thank you in advance^^
In general the game is pretty easy and many different comps work just fine. The only actually hard fights that may require some specialization are against multiple [redacted] ordos and with mods I find fighting Dassault-Mikoyan, Blade Breakers and Shadowyards to be rather challenging. But keep playing and find out for yourself!

Why not be like Paradox?
You can't just become a soulless DLC factory overnight, it takes years of effort and dedication.
