I made a backup with CTRL + C then CTRL + V in the same folder
Might be the reason it didn't work. The game doesn't load files based on their names, it loads everything in the folder, and you now have two files defining the same system with the same ID. The unmodified one seemingly loads later and simply overwrites the changed one.
Move the backup outside of your starsector\data folder or any of its subfolders.

Alright, will retry that as soon as I get my hands on another Paragon since I started a new playthrough and deleted the old save.

Edit: Ok, removing the backup file worked. The sound is almost normal now. I think I need to remove the bottom part too, which seems to add a continuous sound effect.

But this is already very good, no more sound clipping. Thanks again.

Sorry for double posting, but unfortunately it didn't work.

I made a backup with CTRL + C then CTRL + V in the same folder, edited the file and removed the block, saved, launched the game and tried with a Paragon, the "sound dampening" still happens.

It's a bit strange because it should definitely have worked. By removing this block I removed everything that was sound related in the file.

Any other possible solutions?

Thanks!

General Discussion / Re: Is the Hephaestus at a good spot?
« on: April 11, 2024, 08:57:03 AM »
I've posted some loadouts before that used the HAG and some people told me to use Hellbore instead.

I tried, but the Hellbore's projectile is too slow for me to consider it a good weapon, despite the very good damage.

On the other hand, the HAG goes "pew pew pew", and does the job pretty well, especially against fast moving, agile, and annoying ships.

So yes, in my opinion the HAG is in a decent spot.

General Discussion / Re: tell me few things about this game
« on: April 11, 2024, 08:54:09 AM »
I'll tell you a few things about the game alright:

It's one of the best space games I've ever played.

I played SPAZ, loved it, wanted more, couldn't find anything like it, and one day, on the SPAZ forum, someone posted a link to Starsector and I already knew it was gonna be a blast.

The game has evolved a lot since I bought it in 2015. The updates are very slow, but very worth it. They usually change a lot of stuff.

I usually play it in bursts. I can stop playing for a year or more, but when I come back to it I always have a lot of fun.

The only, and I mean really, the *only* downside of Starsector, is that it doesn't have multiplayer.

If I knew how to code, I would attempt it, just basic multiplayer, other players would only control officers in combat. But considering how much fun I have when I play solo, this would be multiplied by 10 if played in multiplayer. (Yes, I very much enjoy playing with friends!)

Anyways, welcome to the game, and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do.

Edit: Also, to address what Alex posted, the game definitely does *not* leak RAM in vanilla version. Installing mods can cause all sorts of performance problems so that's mainly why I'm playing vanilla.

I personally like story points and the way they are currently implemented, but I'm not opposed to change.

starsector-core\data\shipsystems\fortressshield.system

Code
"soundFilterType":"LOWPASS",
"soundFilterGain":0.75,
"soundFilterGainHF":0.0,

Can probably just remove the whole block. Make a backup, just in case.

Thanks a lot, will try that next time!

Hey,

When piloting a ship with Fortress Shield, when I activate it, I really dislike the sound effect it adds. There's a lot of clipping with it, it's just not good for me.

Is there a way in the config file to disable that "change of sound", or is a mod mandatory?

Thanks.

General Discussion / Re: How to get rid of those white flashes?
« on: April 04, 2024, 03:08:44 AM »
I finally decided to test disabling whiteout explosions, and I have no idea why I haven't done that sooner, it's indeed much better.

I also turned off the UI noise and again, miles better.

I'm glad these options exist.

Starsector mostly runs on a single thread. I only know that audio is outsourced to another thread.

with minimum input lag.

That's the thing, even "minimum" for me, is way too much. I've never tolerated any amount of input lag, turned v-sync off as soon as it became a thing.

The switch from 60hz to 165hz was really good, even less input lag, especially for FPSs. So I don't want to "ruin" it by adding some amount of input lag for a prettier picture.

By the way, in hyperspace, idle goes down to 24% minimum, so it's definitely harder to run the game at this framerate than 60 fps.

Do you know if the game is single threaded? I haven't done any tests regarding that, but that could explain it.

150 fps is perfectly playable though. Not ideal, but playable. So I'll keep using that. Still doesn't explain why the CPU instantly tanks to 1% idle when I play at 167 fps though.

Unfortunate choice of monitor for this GPU

Mmh, why is that? I don't fully understand.

This one doesn't list G-Sync compatibility, which is rare in 2024. Although, as of 2019, you should be able to run FreeSync with NVIDIA's GPUs, I have no idea what refresh rate range will be available or if there are other pitfalls involved. It might run perfectly fine, though.

Oh, if it's just for that, don't worry. I don't plan on using any type of "sync". Screen tearing is a non issue for me, even more so at 165hz. Unless I'm purposely looking for it, I won't even see it.

What I'm more worried about is not getting 165 fps unless I set a framerate higher than that, and then the CPU tanks for some weird reason, and it's just Starsector. I've tried about 15 different games on this rig and all run fine, save for 2 which are known to not be well optimized so again, not worrying about that. (And they never go below 60 fps anyways.)

I guess I'll play with 150 fps then, no other choice. Not about to change a whole bunch of settings for just one game.

As for the game running well in big battles and hyperspace, I wouldn't worry either.

I run it 100% vanilla, and my previous rig with a CPU at 3.7ghz could run it at 60 fps under any circumstance save for battlestation battles where it went into the 50s.

I doubt I'll get 150 fps during big battles though, that's true. But we'll see.

Also sorry for the late reply, was playing something else all day.

Will reply again tomorrow.

Thanks.

What's your monitor?

Asus TUF VG279Q1A

Hey,

I'm back to the game after a long break, wanted to test the new update.

I'm on a brand new rig with a new monitor too, 165hz.

I downloaded and installed the game, entered my key, launched the game, configured it, so far so good.

Then I edited the config file to disable v-sync and I changed the max framerate to 165.

I relaunched the game, and I'm getting 150 fps with 83% idle. Not good. My GPU is an RTX 4070 TI and my CPU runs at 5ghz.

Now, this is where things get even weirder: If I set the max framerate to 180, I am now getting around 167 fps, but my idle is at 1%, so obviously this is a disaster.

I'm not sure what to do here, I really want my 165 fps, but the game doesn't seem to like that at all.

I can run other, more demanding games, at around 300 fps if I don't cap them, so the rig should be more than capable of running Starsector at the desired framerate without using that much CPU.

Thanks for reading and for your replies.

Edit: Did some more testing:

167 fps in config file: I get exactly 167 fps, but idle goes immediately at 1% in the main menu.

166 fps in config file: I get 155 fps, and idle sits at 83%.

Still not sure what's happening here.

General Discussion / Re: Why no Steam?
« on: June 08, 2023, 09:30:24 AM »
This has been discussed before:

The frequency of updates is currently too slow for Steam. Steam users expect smaller but more frequent updates.

If people see that there can be a year gap between each update they will just demolish the game in the reviews.
