General Discussion / Re: Let's talk about low tech ships
« on: March 18, 2021, 09:32:45 PM »
I wish there was more differentiation between low tech and high tech. A lot of low-tech ships are really shield dependent and so end up playing like "high-tech but worse"

There's also the fact that low-tech ships are far more vulnerable to missiles in terms of damage resistance, yet they have inferior point defense compared to high-tech with those super long range PD lasers.

General Discussion / Re: Conquest is bad - change my mind
« on: December 10, 2020, 09:42:55 AM »
I have tried to build a playthrough entirely around Conquests.

My playstyle revolved around putting as much DPS on both sides of the ship as possible - Storm Needlers, Heavy Needlers and Assault Chainguns - wading into the middle of multiple enemy ships (armor hullmods help) and in this way abusing the stellar overall DPS of the Conquest by exposing both sides to enemies. If you're only using one side at a time, it's worthless.

If you use both sides, it's... just OK. It works well as a player ship. At the fleet scale, like if you use ten of these and put them on escort, it doesn't work because you split the enemy fleet and then, at any given time, your Conquests are only firing with one side (at the now-independent front lines.) You can at most use one or two or these and have to literally wedge them in the middle of the enemy fleet.

With the huge Assault Chaingun nerf coming in .95A this will not work well anymore though.

hard disagree on storm needlers being bad

they are godlike on conquests, in concert with some assault chainguns

And come on you're fighting a frigate that's supposed to be a long range support. You could fit literally anything on that Tempest and it would win. Who knew one on the most advanced frigates in the game can kill a fly...

tempest with 2x phase lance 1-pops almost every frigate besides the monitor, it's just a quick simulator example

dunno why people are saying phase lance and ion pulser are bad

vanilla balance in general is thrown off by missiles being way, way, way, way, way too good, but lots of stuff is usable for certain cases.
generally a good idea to stay away from EMP weapons, except for salamanders, or when you're fighting droneships. they are pretty awful against most other ships

antimatter blasters are very broken, especially on phase ships (try 10x AM blaster Doom for a near-godmode loadout)

heavy blasters/mining blasters are very broken on safety-override ships, particularly big ones

Star Sector has this annoying curve where after you figure out how the game works it becomes very easy, and it almost feels like cheating to play against AI. Adding some form of player-vs-player combat seems to be the natural solution. Has Alex considered adding a system like GSB where you can match your fleets against pre-made fleets uploaded by other players?

Mods / Re: [0.8.1a] Degenerate Portrait Pack v1.1

You do realize that all you may achieve here is to manage to get this mod closed too, do you?

Why do you deflect and shift blame?
An old member of the community tried to scare away a fledgeling modder with threats that his 100% fair-usage of anime pictures in his mod is totes illegal.
This kind of behavior should be called out whenever it's attempted - it's awful and damaging to the modding community.

I'm not angry; I don't actually care if I 'win people over', especially not you. The argument was resolved before some newbie showed up and decided to claim something that wasn't true in order to start an argument. You're assisting that, which makes your net contribution negative.

1) I have been playing Star Sector longer than you, so I find the use of "newbie" puzzling

2) Everything I wrote is correct - there is nothing unlawful about this mod. The person who said so was making a childish attempt to censor something he doesn't like. You are now making an equally childish attempt to circle the wagons and pretend he didn't do anything wrong.

It wouldn’t be a big deal if your portraits weren’t in violation of copyright laws.

There is nothing contrary to copyright law about this mod. If he was selling it, it would be a different story. But he isn't.

I don't understand why you would speak so authoritatively about law when you don't know what you're talking about. If you just don't like anime, or the mod isn't in line with your tastes, say that. Don't feign legal expertise.

General Discussion / Re: Unused weapons
« on: December 09, 2018, 08:48:10 AM »
A lot of people don't realize this, but the mining blaster is actually superior to the heavy blaster vs armor (because it does more damage per shot). It also consumes a little less flux.
Mining blasters + ion cannons on a safety-override Aurora will chew up any hegemony fleet.

General Discussion / Re: Blueprint acquisition and raiding
« on: November 21, 2018, 09:43:41 AM »
If you raid stations that have the "heavy industry" module, you can get good blueprints. You can get capital blueprints from raiding Sindria, albeit at a low chance.

I wish blueprints were not so stupidly rare though. The only endgame fun in this game is building unique fleets, and you need blueprints to do that.

Suggestions / Fixing Markets - an Idea
« on: April 25, 2017, 12:58:59 PM »
Right now what prevents you from trying out a new fleet concept or a new ship loadout or whatever isn't credits, but simply the matter of actually finding the ships and weapons needed. Credits are almost never a factor.
There is some borderline buggy scarcity for over half the game's content which becomes obvious if you use the console command mod to search for items. For example, the Monitor frigate doesn't spawn in ANY market. Xyphos LPCs spawn in 2 markets and with outrageous rarity. I did ~100 market updates (each takes an ingname month, naturally) and the best source of Xyphos LPCs only produced four LPCs out of those hundred updates.

This is just an example, many many items are nearly, or actually, nonexistent. The market scarcity also makes the universe feel like a contrived game setting, with its conditions governed by game rules. It doesn't make sense that the biggest market in a faction's capital system will have ten or fifteen ships for sale and two or three of various weapon types.

And like I said, credits are rarely a limiting issue. Everything gives a huge amount of credits in this update.

Here's my suggestion to help with both issues: make large markets like those in capital systems have EVERYTHING, in huge numbers, but at an extreme price markup. If you go to New York or Tokyo you can find most anything, but it's going to run you a lot of money. Same concept.

That way you can choose between getting bargain deals at small markets (but not knowing exactly what you'll be buying) or you can go to capital systems and spend your millions on putting together the exact fleet you want.

General Discussion / Re: Thoughts on the Colossus.

I've always sought out Apogees for fleet logistics, they have huge cargo capacity for a combat cruiser (300 - Colossus, a dedicated freighter of equal size, has 900)

General Discussion / Re: Favorite ships of 0.8?
« on: April 23, 2017, 06:50:41 PM »
The Aurora is the pound-for-pound king of ships in 0.8. If you use safety override it can dissipate enough flux to constantly fire three heavy blasters (that's 1500 DPS on its own) and 4-6 IR pulse lasers (152 DPS each)
It also goes 260+ speed with its ability activated.

Honorable mention to the Tempest, but the terminator drone is wimpy this patch. It doesn't venture away from the Tempest no matter what, and it can't actually strip shields or inflict much damage. I preferred the Tempest when it had a gnarly little sidekick which could go mano-e-mano with most frigates.

Where are people finding the hanger modspec?

I found one at a Tri-Tac military market, but I've heard they're also gettable from research stations.

I dig this update. You're putting some 10+ man teams to shame with this pace of content.
