Suggestions / Re: Integrating the Independents and Nova Maxios
« on: April 09, 2024, 05:37:22 AM »
Just ironing over the Independents entirely and folding them into other factions feels like a step back in what it offers the player.

Agree with Bungee_man that making each Independent market actually its own entity to be much preferable.
Or even grouping them by regions so there'd be a handful of independent factions.

Or just leave it as it is, it's better than removing the Independents. The current implementation may have downsides but frankly I don't see the problem.

Cheers! It's an older mod so it may be slightly under-tuned by mod standards. But some of the weapons really stand out, like the Blackrock version of the Burst PD, or the Kinetic Dumbfire Missiles.

Could someone be so kind and share the upload links here? Discord is awful and I've sworn not to touch it.  ;)

Welcome!

The downside is that the older OpenGL drivers are slightly slower (just with OpenGL), I noticed this with my old R9 card and the newer OpenGL was a godsend. But that won't do you any good if it doesn't run the game at all.

Also, and this is of note: Starsector and Minecraft both use LWJGL, which is a special implementation of OpenGL + Java, and also the reason why those two games behaved the same for you. Other OpenGL or Java games don't necessarily have to crash with the newer driver. It depends on what the software is trying to do graphics-wise.

Cheers. You have the newer OpenGL drivers. You could try the 22.5 WHQL drivers. The card is from 2017 so you may not be missing out on too many features between these two driver versions.

Is this an older generation of card? What driver versions have you tried?

AFAIK the OpenGL fixes happened around August 2022. The older generations of cards had their 'final' driver release in June '22.
If possible, you want to compare both OpenGL versions. It's very unlikely that they're both going to throw this error.

Modded & backported drivers exist if your card is EOL.

Tell us more please.

Nice!

I don't have time lately to go heavy into vidyagames, but a playthrough will be forthcoming. Congrats on the release.

Suggestions / Re: Make fighters cost deployment points
« on: July 04, 2023, 10:05:24 AM »
Fighter strength being resembled by OP, tying into carrier loadout, and carrier strength being resembled by DP is a fine chain of power relationships. There's no immediate reason to add another thing to balance for and against - except to have another thing.

If there was a situation that could not accurately be accounted for in the game to necessitate this extra "handle", that would be a different story. For example: Assume a scenario where all fighters cost 0 OP, and we had Light, Medium and Heavy Hangars able to field different kinds of fighters. Then it would make sense to account for fighter power by making them cost DP. Even then, it would not strictly be necessary because carrier DP and OP can be tuned.

Not just salamanders. The AI loses a game of "chicken" with itself often when faced with incoming missiles that it could easily take on shields. This becomes especially obvious when not much else is going on and you'd expect the AI to feel safe to take a little bit of shield flux. In the middle of combat it is preoccupied and tends to care less or act less on incoming missiles. And yeah the defensive turning vs. missiles is part of it. It also backs up when it wouldn't have to.

I don't think it's strictly a bug. Just overly cautious behavior.

Seconding the notion that what's holding your FPS back is likely a GPU conflict. Your 3050 Ti should be able to provide stable, high FPS no sweat. Even the AMD onboard should be able to, should you want to go that route.

The AMD graphics driver issues relate more to Radeon cards.

AMD GPU?

This happens when you delete misc. Java settings. Some of the "cleaner" utilities vacuum Java settings which includes the key. Java update may do this too, apparently.

Lol, is this the pirates anonymous thread? Banhammer incoming!

I think there's no higher compliment (besides being imitated) than pirates buying your game.

It sounds like a Conquest without the range. Overtuned ships are honestly fun to play because the risk never quite goes away. Situational shields also teach good habits.

Yep, the difference between what people think AI is and does and what it actually is and does is staggering. Decades of Hollywood have primed us to make crazy assumptions where what we have in effect is just a couple of language models with huge databases. Something as trivial as looking at the world through a camera and "understanding" what is being seen is nigh impossible for our driving/moving AIs. Best you can do is get a 3D view of all the solid objects. Jordan Peterson talked about this I believe.. I remember a thought-provoking conversation about observation and meaning.

There was this goofy article the other day about feeding a GPT chatbot with the desire to destroy humanity and what it did amounted to gathering info on google and trying to influence others on social media. That about sums up the danger. What ChatGPT is is an amalgamation of its creators, meaning it spouts liberal viewpoints, is very race-conscious except when it concerns racism against whites, is easy to convince to diss certain celebrities and very defensive of others. You know what I mean. And on top of that, you have to go through everything it says and every bit of code it produces with a fine comb, because to assume that it just knew what it was doing is irresponsible as heck.
