The mission generation seems heavily tilted toward survey and scouting. I frequently see worlds with eight or ten missions, and only one of them will be cargo.

I fly an Odyssey with autopulse lasers. I'm backed up by an Aurora with a plasma cannon, a pair of heavy blaster Medusae, and three frigates of rotating types and configurations.

I hadn't played for a while pre-.53a, but with Gun Runners and a bit of moneycheating, I'm having a blast zipping around with a little fleet of my own and picking on pirates.

I think tonight I'll build myself a bigger fleet. >.>

Next time I think about this, I'm going to try on my old laptop. I think Alex suggested it wouldn't work as well as it used to, but it surprised me that it worked at all last time. :P

I actually kind of like that you can see everything you need by just looking into one corner of the screen.

This. Having to look at different parts of the screen to get related information while doing precision maneuvering would really bug me.

Rage! Starfarer-with-a-map is up there with Mass Effect 3 on my anticipated-games list. <.<

I think it does shared memory, too, and I've got plenty of that.

You could always release 0.5 and we could find out. :P

I've found it surprisingly tolerant of terrible hardware. My oooooold laptop has a 1.8ghz Pentium M and an ATI Mobility Radeon X300, I think, with 64mb of memory, and last spring Starfarer ran well enough to put on a projector and impress all my college friends with the pretty explosions.

Yep. It's moving along at a good clip - going to add save/load functionality soon. There's the larger "make it into a game" task, though - right now it's just a bunch of features, but that a game does not make.

If you have basic fly around and blow stuff up functionality, then who cares about save and load? I'll just leave the game minimized if I want to come back to it. :P

Interesting post. I look forward to this next release, whenever it may come. By Christmas, maybe? *hopeful look*

Why not make translations a community effort?

Hmm... need a cool name for a 2nd in command (I don't think the officer structure will go beyond that - would be a bit hard to manage for a large fleet). Was thinking "first mate", which feels a bit too age-of-sail, or maybe XO.

Go all-out age of sail and call him the First Lieutenant.

For the officer structure, could you tie it to ship size? A battleship might have a couple of officer positions, a frigate might have one or two.

Yeah, we really need to have the campaign layer (I guess we're calling it that now? I don't know. I've used everything from "travel" to "meta" to "layer 2" to "strategic"... it's starting to confuse ME) to give meaning to the battles. That's the main reason to push it up instead of focusing on polishing up combat - I think the game will be a lot more fun and replayable with both, rather than a more polished combat on its own.

Having played a lot of Mount & Blade over the past few days, I'm really hardly able to wait for this stage. So many times have I been riding around the map thinking, "Man, if only I could play this game IN SPACE..."

The radar ribbon can already get a bit cluttered, though, in a big fight.
