However, i just can't get it to work for me. They just don't have the capacity to stand and fight with any weapon, no matter what combo I give it.

I am reminded of ships from Colony Wars, the Siege cannon ships that were basically giant guns in space, or the huge ships from Macross that opened up into giant cannons.

We have something similar with the Onslaught and it's thermal pulse cannon, but I was wondering if we could see some ships, fragile smaller ships that have an extremely long range cannon (fired from the map screen) or a larger ship with a hard mounted weapon like a huge rail gun or laser.  Any thoughts?

there are a few things that I find -really- handy.

1. Carriers. Fighters distract the enemy turrets and allow missiles and torpedo's to sneak through, not to mention bombers and interceptors against their ordnance and fighters.

2. Big ships. A few big ships will do you a lot of good. Battlecruisers and up for your anvil.

3. Fast moving destroyers are great for irritating the enemy station just be sure they have good shields.

Medium cruisers and cruisers are a real pain against stations, and aren't fast enough to really avoid fire, and can't take enough fire to cope. The Doom is the only exception as it's mines play merry hell with stations.

4x Mjolnir cannons, 4x dual flak, 2 heavy burst lasers in the front position, cyclone reaper launchers in the front, no secondary missiles. This is a beast for combat and will pummel to death most of your enemies.

Just be sure you have a lot of carrier support.

Assuming David is the artist, I have to give him mad props. Not only has he made the game look gorgeous. He has also managed to make a series of ships that look radically different but all fit within the same general meta... Which is a monumental task and paramount to flying a 787 through a pinhead.

I JUST WANT THIS GAME TO BE DOOOOONE!

Hey I just wanted to say that this game is shaping up to be AMAZING.

I have been here (for better or worse) since I think V6, but enough to remember when it was just the base constellation and not much else.

Watching this game grow into what it is currently has been one hell of a trip, and I can't wait to see what it becomes.

run where? The 'raid' takes up the whole screen, and generally speaking they are so huge that it's like doing a square dance in a mine field!

So I was on my way to my home system when a positively GIGANTIC number of pirate ships just spawned in front of me, like, 20 armadas. they all jump me, and now I am counting 30 ships or more in each battle against my fleet, where I get a lowly 200 fleet points to defend myself... Generally speaking, I don't see this as winnable, what gives?!
