General Discussion / Re: this is the greatest game ever made
« on: February 08, 2021, 01:33:52 PM »
Starsector is one of the games by which I measure others against. Whenever I look at or play a new game, I find myself wondering if I'm having more fun than if I was just starting a new playthrough of my favorite in the same genre. For roguelikes that's Cataclysm. For colony sims that's Rimworld. For tactical combat, that's Battle Brothers. And for space sims that's Starsector.

General Discussion / Re: Is this game dead?

I want to offer a word of encouragement to the developer here. When projects drag on for months at work, my psychological well being tends to take a hit. I cannot fathom what a decade of work on one thing must feel like. Good on you for sticking with something you feel so deeply about for so long.

My field isn't software development, strictly speaking, but it is tech heavy. I've worked with a number of people who started out freelance and then got a salaried position, or were salary and went freelance. My experience has been that the people who had more salaried work experience under their bent tended to do better once freelance, while the people who were freelance had some catching up to do once they joined a company. Tackling one aspect at a time definitely seems to be the path that more often leads to success.

General Discussion / Re: Does anyone else prefer using mainly frigates?
« on: January 21, 2021, 08:17:45 AM »
Don't you find the frigate wolf packs suffering from attrition, or do the frigates somehow manage to stay alive most of the time? I usually get an initial pack of frigates early on, and then just stop holding on to them and let them die out as they are destroyed in battle. By the time I have my first capital, it's pretty rare for me to have more than one or two frigates left.

General Discussion / Re: Ironman Runs
« on: January 14, 2021, 10:06:53 PM »
I only play Ironman. There are also a few additional self-imposed rules that I now almost always follow. Taken together, I feel it provides the right level of challenge for me.

If the flagship is lost, I delete the save file (I'm dead)

No tutorial rewards, ships, salvage (The hammerhead provides too much of a head start)

Ships only from own battles that were victories; no ships or weapons from market; no ships from exploration (This forces me to take fights in order to progress, which is generally how I like to play)

No trading with pirates or Luddic Path (I like playing as the "good guys," also trading with them is too economically powerful)

No negotiations with Luddic Path (There are only two things I can't stand in this world: people who are intolerant of other people's cultures, and the pathers)
