General Discussion / Re: other games like starfarer

Freelancer is a really wonderful and amazing game, true, but it's nothing like Starfarer. I guess we're kind of off topic now though. :P

General Discussion / Missiles
« on: February 28, 2012, 11:03:52 PM »
Alright, so i'm a huge missile fan. I love slapping some LRM racks or MIRVs on my flagship... i just think missiles are freaking awesome in space games. I can't help but feel they're a little underpowered though, especially LRMs. Even against cruisers and stuff, LRMs are normally easily dodged by simply moving in a straight line, or harmlessly eaten by the shields. I personally feel that missiles are due a tracking upgrade all across the board. Or at least if the purpose of LRMs is to go after capital ships, have them only seek capital ships. I also think it'd be cool to have a (large) missile that partially penetrated shields. Maybe called a plasma tipped missile or something. Anyway, what do you guys think about missiles?

Edit: I'd also like to point out that missiles have, by far, the lowest ammunition on average of any weapons in the game. This doesn't make a lot of sense to me considering there are other limited ammo weapons that are much more reliable at hitting and destroying your enemy.

General Discussion / Re: Should we expect another Hegemony capital ship?

Yeah, but for map control you use interceptors, broadswords, or thunders. That's why i prefer a carrier (astral, odyssey) as my flagship. God thunders are awesome.

I'd love to see another hegemony beast. I've always thought missiles/shells were way cooler in space games than pew pew lasers. (Not to say that lasers aren't cool)

Suggestions / Autopilot
« on: February 28, 2012, 02:09:35 AM »
Kind of a simple suggestion, and one that's probably been brought up before, but i think it would be cool if you could bring up an "autopilot" menu in the system and choose from a list of destinations (planets and stations in the system). Then just click the destination and it'd plot you the fastest route there. Or at least, the most direct route. I don't expect fancy elliptical burns around the sun.

Modding / Re: Question regarding fleet points.

I agree completely, but you know you could always just let them have a com array or two to get their fleet out, i realize it kind of spoils the flow of battle but at least you'd get to fight some of those battlecruisers.

I remember an old space game based off Star trek, it was in flash but i can't remember the name of it.

That would be Flash Trek 2, a very fun game indeed.

Personally i'd restart the campaign, trial and error are how newbies learn, but the Gun Runners mod actually lets you buy a pardon that resets the faction reputation. It's in the mod section, but the pardon is expensive and somewhat hard to get to so yeah, just restart.

Oh snap, i'm so glad i got in here before somebody else mentioned Battleships Forever. http://www.wyrdysm.com/games.php BSF is pretty much the same as starfarer (or vice versa) except without the depth, amazing sprite work, great modding community (though the ship builders are INSANE), wonderful AI, and a million other things that make me love Starfarer. Ever since i played BSF the first time i've been looking for something that could match it... and man was Starfarer a pleasant surprise. Another awesome space game is Transcendence, it's also a very deep game in a very different way, with an excellent modding community and a fun story. http://neurohack.com/transcendence/ All these links in my post, i feel like a spambot!  :P But yeah, check out BSF and Transcendence, they are highly recommended.

Edit: I forgot to mention the best part about these games: they're absolutely free!

I think most of 'em look great. Seems like you've really got a thing going. (:

Aurora? I haven't had much luck making use of them. I mean sure, they're maneuverable as hell and you can kite the enemy something fierce, but i generally run out of ammo for my missiles before i run out of enemies, even with expanded racks. Great fire support, sure, but not on par with the medusa.

General Discussion / Re: Fighter AI
« on: February 22, 2012, 10:37:44 PM »
Heh, yeah. Also now that i think of it, it might also be nice to change the targets that the fighters go after by default. Like for example have your broadswords target enemy bombers without having to order them specifically to intercept them... but perhaps this is wishful thinking from a fighter swarm fan. : P

Yeah no kidding. Nothing more annoying than seeing your last remaining (heavily damaged) broadsword realize he's in for it and start to turn around... only to get smacked in the face by swarm SRMs. I just wish there was some option somewhere to choose how much of the wing has to be destroyed before they RTB. It's even more annoying in campaign where they don't return to the carrier before the end of the battle and have to be repaired for three days.
