Modding / Game slowing to a crawl after large fights

When I first load up the game its rock solid at 60 FPS and 57-65% Idle.

But somehow after a very large and extended battle, the game slows to 17 FPS and 0% Idle.

If I save the game, restart and load back in, its right back up to 60 FPS and 57-65% Idle, until a little while and a large fight again.
(large fight being my 2 carriers vs 5-10 ships)

Is this a memory leak or whats going on? I can't really see anything in the logs.

Could it be a mod that is causing it?

Modding / Allocated 8gb to Java, still out of memory?!

Hey, I know this out of memory topic has been brought up before, but I haven't come across is when Java already has 8gb allocated.

I tried allocating 20gb, but then the game complains that 8gb is the maximum or performance will be deteriorated..

My ram sticks are 16gb each.

Am I running into a memory leak from a mod, am I simply using too many large mods for java to handle? or is it something else?

Suggestions / Set CR Level on ships

I find myself many times having a few extra freighter frigates (early game) or actual freighters (late game) that are never deployed unless I'm forced to.

Ships that really have no business being in combat at all, but sometimes you are engaged outside of optimal conditions and attempt to withdraw, but the enemy pursues and against all odds you still manage to pull out a victory, only now all your ships are recovering CR up to your maximum.

For your non combat ships, this is kind of a waste and 99% of the time they are just sitting in the background.

What if we could tell them not to go beyond a set amount of CR yet still repair, this could also work with newly captured ships if you just want to avoid the major malfunctions, but you don't really want it to go all the way to 80-90% CR as you are going to do a major refit at a station anyhow.

I'll admit it's likely not to save very much supplies, but every little bit can help in those desperate times..

I'm wondering if anyone else has thought of this, and if it's something people would like to see?

I'm sure Alex has many other more pressing matters, but it could be worth thinking about if people are interested.

So, I've just gotten back into SS and I am wildly enjoying it again, aside from one "simple" thing.. the AI.

I just had an encounter where we were evenly matched, but due to my steady officers apparently watching too many rambo movies decides he can hipfire his weapons with 100% accuracy, I was forced to retreat. Fine as that can happened to the enemy as well.

The enemy fleet persues me and I get into another combat engagement.

As most of my ships are 20% or below hull while my ship is roughly 50% I order a full retreat thinking these ships are so damaged they will high-tail it to the top of the screen.

No, instead THEY ALL TURN AROUND in what I can only assume was an attempt to impress me with a heroic death.

My ships were faster, I had hit the full retreat button, so I couldn't give any other orders and yet my ships decided screw retreat, i want to die.

So instead of going full speed to the top of screen they just sort of lazily coasted just in weapons range (theirs and the enemies) until they were eventually whittled down and killed.

If I order a retreat, I expect my ships to drop everything aside from defense and GTFO, not "meh, when i get to it.."

Hi there, after googling, and searching the forums I can't find an answer..

I recently bought a second monitor that I would like to have games play on without it being the primary monitor in Windows.

Most games that don't have specific options for multi-monitor setups allow me to Alt-Enter then drag and drop the window onto the second monitor then Alt-Enter again.

I can't seem to do that with Starsector.. Am I missing an option somewhere where I can choose what monitor it is displayed upon?

Could this be added as an option in the future?

So, I have f.lux in order to lessen strain on my eyes when it's dark. (it reduces blue light from the screen)

Normal, the mouse cursor stands out like crazy (it is normal white even when screen is adjusted thanks to f.lux)

and Starsector seems to work fine normally, but if I turn software mouse on (f.lux reduces blue on the cursor as well) the cursor is gone in starsector, i can still use it, and it highlights menu items like normal, but the cursor is nowhere to be seen.

I don't know if this is a shortcoming of Java, or if there's something about Starsector as other games work fine (though non run on Java as starsector)

Hey, Just got 0.8 myself and enjoying it a lot! Alex did a great job..

Though I just had the game crash on loading an early campaign (not from earlier, just early, as I hadn't gotten very far)

No mods are installed, just a fresh install of 0.8

Modding / Running into an issue with Java, and mods.

So, up to 0.65.1 Starsector has been running fine, and I haven't had any out of memory issues at all. (Note: I have allowed Java to allocated 1024MB of data)

But since the update and the installation of a few mods that are compatible, I'm running into a very annoying issue, I can't load my saves because Java runs out of memory!

So I figure I could just allocate more ram for Java.. but no, My system is 64-bit Windows 7 with a total of 16GB ram (4x4) but I still can't allocate more than 1024?

I have installed 64-bit Java, and set the Vparams to -xms1024m -xms1024m (aka Java gets 1024MB, regardless) as soon as I try to change the numbers to 2048 or 3072 Java doesn't run anymore (I don't even get the launcher up for Starsector)

Java wants the memory all in one chunk right? With 4x4GB sticks I should be able to theoretically assign 4096MB assuming windows does not use that stick at all, which I doubt, but even with windows spreading the load I should be able to assign 2048 or perhaps even 3072, so why won't Java even start if I do?

I have more than enough memory, even if Java wants it all from a single stick.

Anybody have any ideas what I could do?

Suggestions / Another small button on the fleet screen

So, I've recently realized I could hold more loot and supplies if I had a dedicated freighter with me, only now the "all" button for reinforcement before battles becomes moot.. I definitely don't want to deploy my unarmed freighter into a even battle.. it would in all likelihood just die.

So what I propose is another button right where scuttle, mothball and all those other buttons are. In my mind this button would mark the ship as a non-combat, civilian, or freighter. which would mean it would not not automatically be included when you click the "all" button on the reinforcement screen before a battle.

It would still be manually selectable if you really wanted to deploy it for some reason, and it would obviously still be deployed if you are trying to run away from a pursuer.

Only now, even with dedicated freighters you could hit the "all" and then "deploy" without having to manually either click off all the freighters, or click your combat ships one by one.

I'm sure it could be solved another way as well if the button won't fit or whatever..

Thoughts?

I've noticed something odd, but I don't feel like its a bug, more of an minor inconvenience.

So, I have a Microsoft Sidewinder X4 keyboard and it has some media keys at the top, you know the start/pause and skip song buttons and they work fine. even without installing any crappy software (part of the reason I like the keyboard).

Anyways, the Hide/show weapon arcs is bound to my semicolon key, just to get it out of the way.. and it works.. only the skip song buttons also toggles the weapon arc..

I've tried binding the toggle weapon arc thing to multiple different keys, and they work.. only so do all the media buttons along the top of the keyboard.. including the aforementioned Play/pause, Previous song, Next song, but also Mute, and both (up and down) volume controls.

while it is very minor and I can totally live with it, I just found it odd and figured I should report it.

General Discussion / Loading straight into unplayable combat

So, I have a pretty decent fleet, but it can only handle one combat situation at a time, then it has to recover CR, that's all well and good..

But I was caught out by a bigger fleet without enough CR to reliably fight. so I spawned in, and hit retreat. I made it out with most of my ships.

that is fine, retreating shouldn't be a "get out of jail free card" the combat did not end. the enemy fleet pursued and now my ships all have 0 CR.


This is where the bad side of CR comes in. if I fight, I will lose all of my ships. and I can't get away. because the save game loads me right into combat.
Because I retreated I don't have enough CR to fight (as in, I literally cannot control my ships) the only thing for me to do is;
A. watch it play out, and slowly watch all my ships explode and start over. B. Start a new game.

This is incredibly frustrating.

Option A just makes me want to shut the game down and do something else.
I spent a lot of time collecting my ships/weapons and everything, now the game is forcing me to watch them all get destroyed. this is not fun gameplay.

Now, I'm not sure what the best solution is, but this part of CR is not fun, it gets incredibly frustrating and off putting. no matter what you do, you can only watch your fleet go pop.

If I could fight, I could at least put a dent in their fleet, kill a few of them, then I can come back later and finish them off. but as I have 0 CR I can't even fire the PD weapons or raise the shields..

The easiest solution I think would be to let the player at least skip the combat when you do not have and combat ready ships.
That way, I wouldn't have to sit through a slideshow of explosions while I cannot do anything anyways.

EDIT: perhaps letting weapons still function at 0 CR is an option?, they would be prone to shutdowns due to accidents, but they would fire when they could?
This would also make the reverse escape scenario more interesting in that it's not just target practice.. you can actually get hurt..

Shields could function too, but ships with Frontal shields would be at a significant disadvantage..

Bug Reports & Support / Screen sticking in combat

Not sure if it's a bug or feature, but I find it annoying none the less..

My screen tends to "stick" when I hold the trigger in, then once i pass a certain threshold it jumps back to the fluid state it's usually in.
Usually throwing my aim off.

If it's a feature, Why? combat is never in one place long enough for it to be useful to make the view static.. I would much rather have the predictable fluid state all the time, That i can compensate for.. the sudden jump I cannot because I am not prepared for it.

Suggestions / reloading magazines

While the current recharging mechanic works fine in most cases.

I'm wondering if it would be too much hassle to add another type of recharging, magazines.

That is to say recharging all the same, but giving a burst of ammo at once instead of ticking up one by one.

This would open up options for nice minigun type PD weapons (among many others - just an example) where they are extremely powerful PD when they have ammo, but they need 30+ seconds to "change magazine" and while they are changing they are useless.

Some may argue you could accomplish something like this with the burst size, but I'm talking about a weapon that doesn't have to blow all of it's ammo in one go.

Say you have an extreme rate of fire (1000) and about 10000 ammo. like a PD Minigun.. (think of the Phalanx CIWS system of the American Navy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phalanx_CIWS)

This weapon would be exceptional against missiles and fighters while it has ammo, and it can start and stop firing as it pleases, but when the ammo is up it is useless.
Now if you give it a recharge with the current system it would just keep ticking up slowly, IE, some poor sob putting in one shell at a time in the magazine.

I'm thinking about a system that would count down as soon as the current ammo reaches 0 and then when the timer is up it has a full magazine again.
Or, for simplicity it could tick as soon as the ammo count goes down (like having multiple, separate magazines) and only reload a set amount say 2000 of the 10000 total.
(not sure which would be easier to program)

My idea would be akin to the big battle in the Matrix, with everybody running magazines (thousands of shells in one box) all over the place to the "mechs".

General Discussion / How can I increase Logistics Capacity?

I've been playing for a bit and managed to amass a rather big fleet, unfortunately I can't use them all because of Logistical Capability, which after rereading patch notes and some testing, I realized is based on Ships Supplies/day number in the Ship_data.csv.

Now, I have Leadership 10 and Fleet Logistics at 10. my maximum Logistics Capability is 100. I would like it higher though..

I still want ships to cost supplies to run, so I don't really want to reduce supplies/day to something really low. at the same time I want a bigger fleet.

How can I increase my maximum Logistical Capacity?

Or would it be a lot easier to just edit the supplies/day stat for ships anyway?
I mean, I could do it, with a bit of trial and error I'm sure I can find a decently balanced pace.. It's just a lot of work with 5 mods running..


While we are on the topic of Skills, What exactly does emergency repairs entail? Field Repairs (second to last in technology) gives +3 supplies/day to emergency repairs, but I haven't figured out what that actually means?

Is it simply faster repairs the first few seconds, or what? do I need to click or activate anything for it to work?
