Suggestions / Campaign layer AI Improvements
« on: March 23, 2020, 04:29:41 AM »
After a discussion in the discord server regarding "kill target" missions in RPGs and how something similar could be implemented in Starsector we got to a conclusion:
- Killing an enemy admiral and stopping his/her fleet from spawning back further contributes to the snowball effect the game suffers in the late game right now... So how to improve it?

One of the ideas was to make the AI factions more aggressive towards the player. If the player starts attacking a massive faction such as the Hegemony or Tri-Tach and has a colony somewhere, the enemy should gather up a "screw you" fleet lead by an admiral and remove that colony from the map, or take it for themselves, instead of staying passive and engaging the player only if they stumble on it or when defending their own colonies.
If the player starts attacking the trading fleets of some faction (or even their main combat fleets) I expect the enemy to send out scouting fleets actively looking for the player and call in for reinforcements to engage and strike back, or at least gather a fleet of hundreds of ships and raid the player's bases...

The AI feels too passive to threats and as such some features like the "taking down an enemy admiral to reduce the number of fleets the enemy can command" have no impact and only further contribute to the player snowballing the game as the game progresses. It shouldn't be possible for a single player to destroy one of the main factions of the game without having to slowly wear down the supply lines and mess with the chain of command of a faction, just as a faction 10 times the size of the player shouldn't just sit around and do nothing as they see their fleets slowly be destroyed.

Let's take Mount and Blade as an example.... You take an enemy castle, and gather up some men for a garrison. The castle was being guarded by 200 men and you managed to beat them with an army of 300, not bad... The issue is at some point (and often quite quickly) the enemy marshall with gather the armies of all vassals and try to retake the castle, and when they do, their combined armies will often be upwards of 1.5k men... The same does not really happen in Starsector, your actions only make you stronger and there's no risk other than what you are during that exact moment... You know that when you are trying to take an enemy colony the enemy defence fleets will engage you but after that... You have a new colony and a new source of income, but by doing so you are also crippling the enemy faction and they don't do much to stop you... They should be sending to your location the best fleets they have and try to retake the lost colony (or even destroy your own) while that colony is still undefended as the player had little time to gather up a defence fleet to defend the new colony.

I guess the suggestion would be an improved campaign AI that messes with the fleets allowing for coordinated attacks/defences, one that is more aggressive and responds to both the player's actions and the other AI factions' as well. It could improve the late game experience of the game and while it could make it harder for the player to start its own faction it would make maintaining one harder as well, especially at the start.
It would also open up the path to new mechanics such as disrupting the enemy supply lines and eliminating high profile targets as viable options to temporarily cripple the enemy and give you a breathing room to take your own actions.

Modding / Question: How to add a custom shuttle?
« on: August 20, 2017, 08:49:18 AM »
Title^^

I wanted to change the default shuttle (the one the player uses to switch ships in combat) while the player is driving ships from specific factions, WITHOUT overwriting the existing shuttle.

Is this at all possible?

Scanning through the code I find no way to set a custom shuttle, only more and more things pointing me to replacing the default one...

Brief history of the Fringe (Lore)

Spoiler

The Fringe Worlds are burning in the flames of a war the Syndicate did not start. The Hegemony above all wants to have the control over more resources to build an even greater army.
Nobody knows what will be of the Syndicate, if they'll once more rise from the dust and succeed at defending their land or if they'll fall into the command of the enemy.

But that's a story for another time, nobody can tell the future, but the past is a whole other story...

A long time ago, when the Domain began exploring and colonizing the sector, they found a particular region filled with quite interesting planets. Most of them didn't need terraforming at all, and some had incredible materials and artifacts so rare they weren't found by the Domain anywhere else.
The highest ranks of the Domain quickly hid the existence of this area, using it to test new equipment and to conduct questionable research, the worst resulting in the extermination of life in the planet Sascillo. Resources were not the only thing coming from the gates, millions of "test subjects" were brought in secret to the Fringe over the years and everybody lived happily with their lives, as nobody knew experiments were being conducted on humans. The rest of the sector simply enjoyed their brand new terraformed planets...

One day, the unthinkable happened...
The gates suddenly closed, and nobody knew whether they would open ever again.
Scientists of the Domain of Man living in the Fringe had all sorts of ideas and theories, but they all had the hope the gates would reopen again, soon.
Time passed... The gates did not open again.
Despair of those waiting at the gates for a sign of the Domain caused them all to fall, all while the Fringe remained silent.

Without the Domain's watchful eye, some scientists went mad. Some ordered the armed forces under their command to annihilate entire populations for their amusement, some wandered off into the unknown with crazy schemes to find the Domain once more, and others disappeared without leaving a trace.
Many felt betrayed by the Domain and swore vengeance should the gates ever reopen again. They were the founders of the Empire, a group whose goal was the preparation to war with the Domain. To make their ultimate goal a reality, they increased their military power, designed new ships. They had blank production chips, a very valuable commodity after the Collapse, and combined them with the plentiful resources available throughout the Fringe to build a fleet capable of fulfilling this goal.
Some of the Fringe's secrets stopped being so after an accident. The population was not pleased and rebelled, trying to free themselves from the chains of the Empire, the "New Domain". It started a long war that wore both sides down, and all this time they remained oblivious to the rest of the sector...

... That is, until someone found them...

A rebel ship jumped to hyperspace in a desperate attempt to escape certain death, only to become stranded and drifting away as the ship had been severely damaged from the combat.
Eventually, the ship was found, by none other than the Hegemony. They salvaged the ship and interrogated its crew. Soon they found out about the existence of the Fringe Worlds and all the riches in it.
They quickly saw an opportunity to gather enough resources to build a military force so great it would finally allow them to take control over all of the sector.
All they had to do was get rid of the unknown remnants of the former Domain. This should be an easy task. After all, nobody knew of the existence of anything in that region, any attack could easily go unnoticed and nobody would suspect a thing.
And so it was. The Hegemony sent a massive fleet to conquer the Fringe, and they did manage to take one of their planets, devastating those who had little interest to the Hegemony.

The Empire held as best they could, but the fleets were weak and displaced by the war, they did not expect a foreign attack this soon, not by this enemy...
They had to give in to the situation and call for an emergency council with the rebels, offering them the chance to join forces in order to fend off the invaders.
The rebels reluctantly accepted but made some demands, one of them being the ceasing of all experiments being conducted in the population of the Fringe.

And so they formed the Fringe Defence Syndicate, having the single common goal of defending their land.

Bug Reports & Support (modded) / GC Overhead crash - possible memory leak
« on: January 19, 2017, 06:03:50 PM »
Hi! I'm new to the forums as I saw the need to say something about a problem that has been haunting me for a long time...

Occasionally my game crashes and throws a "GC Overhead limit exceeded" error like many people before me.
The problem is I have done the 64bit java replacement, increased the max memory that the game can allocate and the game still uses A LOT of memory, more than what it was supposed to. Like they said, 4GB is more than the game should ever use.
I have tried everything available on the forums, tried a lot of stuff related to modifying the way GC works, but with no effect... The game still crashed and used strange amounts of ram in every attempt to fix the issue.

The game uses around 2.2-2.6 Gb of ram when I start the game, load the save and start roaming, but as soon as I hit the "Save" button (both Save and Save Copy have the same issue) the ram the game is using climbs to 4.3-4.8 Gb. AND STAYS THERE. Over time it decreases to ~3.8 Gb but once I save again the game consumes another 1gb of ram for no reason...

This is my vmparams file:
Code
-server -XX:CompilerThreadPriority=1 -XX:+CompilerThreadHintNoPreempt -Djava.library.path=native\\windows -Xms2048m -Xmx4096m -Xss1024k -classpath janino.jar;commons-compiler.jar;commons-compiler-jdk.jar;starfarer.api.jar;starfarer_obf.jar;jogg-0.0.7.jar;jorbis-0.0.15.jar;json.jar;lwjgl.jar;jinput.jar;log4j-1.2.9.jar;lwjgl_util.jar;fs.sound_obf.jar;fs.common_obf.jar;xstream-1.4.2.jar -Dcom.fs.starfarer.settings.paths.saves=..\\saves -Dcom.fs.starfarer.settings.paths.screenshots=..\\screenshots -Dcom.fs.starfarer.settings.paths.mods=..\\mods -Dcom.fs.starfarer.settings.paths.logs=. com.fs.starfarer.StarfarerLauncher

And my mod list:
Code
Audio Plus
Blackrock Drive Yards
Combat Alarm Sounds
Combat Chatter
Common Radar
Console Commands
Diable Avionics
DynaSector
GraphicsLib
Interstellar Imperium
Junk Pirates
LazyLib
Leading Pip
Neutrino Corp
Nexerelin
PBC
Extra Salvage/Boarding
P9
Portrait Pack
Save Transfer
SCY
ShadowYards
Ship and Weapon Pack
Starsector Plus
Steiner Foundation
Tiandong Heavy Industries
TorchShips (adds evasive maneuver "burn" to campaign)
Tore Up Plenty
TwigLib
Underworld
Upgraded Rotary Weapons
Version Checker

The list is pretty big, and some mods are probably incompatible, but the only reason given for my game to crash is GC overhead exception.
I'd be really lucky is the problem was just an incompatible or unstable mod in my mod list, but I've checked the whole forum for anything related to GC and failed to find anything useful as most times the problem is poor memory limits assignment or executing the wrong file (.exe vs .bat and such).

I am using a laptop, with the following hardware:
Processor: i7-4510U
GPU: NVidia Geforce 840m (2gb)
Ram: 8GB

Running the game at 1366x768 with the max amount of systems, planets and stations when starting a game (pretty heavy start, but still...).
I don't know what else to say or what more information I can provide...
I tried to analyse one of the crash dumps a while back (3.7GB file, wow xD) and the memory hog is related to the campaign, can't really tell exactly to what as I eventually reinstalled the game and have no dumps/screenshots to provide.

If you need anything else please do ask, I know 0.8 is almost around the corner but this really bothers me because when I save I am constantly thinking "Will my game crash now or will I be able to save?".
It can be a minor issue like me being really dumb or blind and not spot something really obvious, but I seriously cannot see it :(

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide me.

EDIT:
Now I am really ashamed...
I just noticed that the game is loading with, and I quote:
Code
2    [main] INFO  com.fs.starfarer.StarfarerLauncher  - Java version: 1.8.0_91 (64-bit)

It has been using Java 8 all this time for some reason...
So now my question is, does this have anything to do with the occasional crash?

EDIT 2:
Tested the game again with Java 7 (64bit) and when saving the ram used went from 1.8gb to 4.7gb, decreasing to 3.4gb as soon as the game finished saving and further down to 3.1gb after cruising around for a bit.
