Mostly a suggestion to Alex as an in-depth idea for the travel system/how it would work.

I'm not sure how much Alex has given thought to his implementation of a multiple systems thing. Probably a lot. May even have a system planned. But if not/still open to new ideas, I'd personally like to see a Galaxy Map system similar to...perhaps something like Space Rangers 2 (cheesy name, great game). May have been suggested before, but I'm a bit lazy when it comes to searching the Suggestions forum.  :P

I am referring to something like this piece of DeviantArt work of Mass Effect.
http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/199/6/e/Mass_Effect_Galaxy_Map_by_DWebArt.png
(Ignore the silly lines, pretend the dots are smaller, and pretend that the map is larger [maybe])

Basically, a large grand galaxy map could be brought up, and you could select a dot, which represents a system, and travel to it. The fuel consumed would depend upon the distance between the system you're traveling from and to, of course.

This would also be excellent for mod compatibility, as modders could simply create a system sheet for their mod and specify coordinates of where it would be placed on the galaxy map (as well as other data). Allowing for quite a lot of consistently with compatibility.

Suggestions / Blow It To Pieces! (Detached damaged ship parts)
« on: April 18, 2012, 02:11:48 AM »
(Might be slightly hard to follow if you're not a modder)
Just a small idea I thought of. I thought it might be cool for ships to have parts of it destroyed and detach if said parts take too much damage. As in, we could have things like wings, or misc parts of the hull be separate images, but still be attached normally in-game as one ship (attached to the base image coded into the ,ship file). However, if that part takes too much damage, and is "destroyed", it is detached from the ship as a piece of flaming wreckage. (Note: It doesn't change as an image, it just has a lot of heat/etc like how ships normally take damage) A code in .ship could specify coordinates on the detach area and cover it with damage effects to not make it look so weird in case the part doesn't look that great when cut from the ship.

This would not be a forced option. It would only be extra specifications in the .ship file. If it doesn't have the specification, then ships are simply destroyed/disabled as they normally are. So no extra work for modding/etc if you don't want to put forth the effort for it.

Thoughts?

hydremajor probably explained the idea better than I.
You mean a "sections" system like in Battleship forever ?

I.E. "Child" section is linked to "parent" section wich is linked to "parent2" section

If "parent" section destroyed, "child" section goes drifting in space

Zero Wing: Starfarer Edition

(Note, no download yet, once again. Just throwing up my WIP thread. Will start working on it after I release my first Valentine Corporation version tomorrow)

Quote

In A.D. 2101

War was beginning.

Captain: What happen ?

Mechanic: Somebody set up us the bomb.

Operator: We get signal.

Captain: What !

Operator: Main screen turn on.

Captain: It's you !!

CATS: How are you gentlemen !!

CATS: All your base are belong to us.

CATS: You are on the way to destruction.

Captain: What you say !!

CATS: You have no chance to survive make your time.

CATS: Ha ha ha ha ....

Operator: Captain !!

Captain: Take off every 'ZIG'!!

Captain: You know what you doing.

Captain: Move 'ZIG'.

Captain: For great justice.

Yup. Totally working on this after I release the first version of my Valentine Corp mod tomorrow. I don't usually make/do things based on memes, but I have actually played Zero Wing to the end and found the translations hilarious myself. And the gameplay was so bad it's awesome.

So yes. Zero Wing in Starfarer. I solemnly swear to add the hilariously bad translations to the faction greetings exactly as they are in game. And of course making ripping the sprites from Zero Wing to add into Starfarer (after Starfare-ifying them). I'm probably going to add the Zigs to Hegemony or something and just make an entire faction for CATS. Just to be a tease until I start working on it (after the release of Valentine Corp) and until I get this thread cleaned up, here.

Move 'ZIG'.

Discussions / Ruin a Wish (forum game)
« on: April 17, 2012, 07:27:15 PM »
Forum games are something to "play" when you're bored and have nothing else to do, for those who are unaware.

Rules:
Ruin a Wish goes like this. First poster makes a wish. Second poster grants said wish but in a devious way, and then makes another wish. The third poster does the same as the second poster.

Example:
Poster 1: I wish for a million dollars.

Poster 2: Granted. You get a million dollars, but it's all in pennies.

I wish I had a car.

Poster 3: Granted. There's a scrap hull from the junkyard sitting in your backyard now.

I wish I had a pony.

So let's start. I'll start off with something easy.

I wish I had a new TV.

Discussions / The Unofficial Music Thread of ROCK (any type)
« on: April 17, 2012, 07:10:39 PM »
The unofficial music thread for sharing nice rock music between your fellow forumers. Discuss the music. Link us to a video of some songs you like in this genre, share them. It can be any type of rock. Classic, 80's, Hard Rock, Punk, Symphonic, Blub blub blub blub blub blub blub.

Anyway.

I have found myself listening to this quite a bit as of late. Quite a nice song to build up some energy.

Discussions / What's Your Phobia?
« on: April 17, 2012, 07:05:10 PM »
Okay, it doesn't have to be an actual phobia (but it can be). And of course, you are not forced to say, but what frightens you in some shape or form?

I myself have, to my shame, Trypanophobia. The fear of needles. I don't freak the hell out and go insane near them or anything, but I get somewhat fidgety, nervous, and the pain from them sticking one in me seems more heightened than normal.

Not too good with heights, either.

Modding / Valentine Corporation (faction)
« on: April 17, 2012, 06:15:30 PM »
VALENTINE CORPORATION

This thread is currently just a small preview. I'm still fine-tuning the ships I have currently (graphics-wise and statistics-wise), creating new ones, and adding the faction. So there's not a download QUITE yet, but there will be one tomorrow, if not the day after. (Also, I will be adding onto the release when the first version comes out, of course) Until then, enjoy the "graphics."

Huzzah, another faction mod. Don't get too excited at the moment. It's mostly just kitbashing/frankenships currently. But I do indeed hope to add new weapons, as well as my own custom work when I'm not feeling like such a lazy procrastinator. Don't get the wrong impression though, I'm (mostly) pleased with these kitbashes myself, and with luck, you will be too.

Lore & Backstory

(Don't have to read this of course. It's just if you want some history)

Quote
The Valentine Corporation originally began as a small company, manufacturing and delivering romantic-oriented merchandise to lovers everywhere within Hegemony systems, which they were based in. Their monopoly became surprisingly groundbreaking, with Valentine Corp products almost always being within the top 5 most bought products on the many Hegemony systems they were based in. Their success did not go unnoticed, however. The rise in piracy within recent years began to take its toll on Valentine Corp. Many raiders began to single out and attack Valentine Corp freighters carrying shipments of valuable jewelry, money, and other goods. While Hegemony escorts and the independent contractors that Valentine Corp hired helped to somewhat quell these raids, the thorns in Valentine Corp's backside were never successfully removed. Shipments and vast amounts of money were lost. Their vast losses ended up bankrupting and destroying many of Valentine Corp's businesses, outlets, and other locations. Valentine Corporation's assets and stocks fell into a depression that all but slipped a noose around their neck.

Finally. After a group of pirate raiders attacked and captured a small convoy carrying women's lingerie, they decided they had had enough.

They began to pour all the investments they could afford into military-grade weaponry research. And as it turns out, they were quite good at it. They created powerful fighter defense squadrons (a single convoy containing at least four of them) that put heavy pressure on attacking ships, forcing them into a defensive position while their freighters' new and powerful ballistics and missile weaponry snapped their necks. Capturing many attacking freighters and the surrendered goods with them, they saw a rise in profit and money like never before. Valentine Corp enjoyed the taste too much to simply remain a manufacturer of lover's goods, and so they branched out to an independent military force. They served both love and death, putting great care into both. Their riches became enormous. So much that they bought and colonized their own systems, essentially becoming their own nation as well as a company. And gradually, their status as a romance manufacturer faded into obscurity. Their roles as Merchants of Love and Romance were replaced as Merchants of Death and Fear. Through it all, however, they managed to maintain an alliance and generally friendly relationship with Hegemony, despite many conflicts and war-scares. Their friendly-ness with Hegemony, however, has put them in a death match with Tri-Tach, having had many a bloody feud with them as the years passed, eventually becoming arch-enemies in open all-out war.

One thing is for certain. Valentine Corporation remains happy as ever to lovingly craft a heart-shaped missile...and having it find where it hurts you the most.

Fleet Capabilities

Valentine Corporation ships rely mostly on ballistic and missile weaponry as well as their abnormally strong fighters. While they have done experimentation with energy weaponry, not many Valentine Corp ships come equipped with a lot of energy points. Mostly due to the cost of manufacturing them (not to mention it's the signature of their enemy, Tri-Tach), as their ships are already quite expensive to produce thanks to their heavily armored/armed nature. Furthermore, absolutely no Valentine Corp ship has full 360 degree shields, most of them not even covering half of the ship. Instead, they rely on their very resilient hulls to take more damage, and their powerful fighters to distract enemies from their larger ships.

Pros

+ Powerful attack fighters
+ Very durable hulls
+ Loaded with ballistic/missile weapon points
+ Strong ballistic/missile weaponry
+ Variety of ships (err, there will be anyway)
+ Very maneuverable ships
+ Decently fast ships

Cons

- Lack of energy weapon points
- Flux capacity is average at best
- Limited shields
- Some of the Fleet Point costs are a bit large
- Their ships tend to be expensive

Ship List

(Still fine-tuning/coloring/improving quality of these (especially the Firelance/Fringes), so they probably will not be quite as-is they are now when the release comes out tomorrow/day after. Also, there will be more. This is just a preview of the current ones.)

Fighters

Frigates

Destroyers

         SAVANT                REVENANT

Trylobot - For his ship editor. Because it's wonderful and keeps me from fiddling with java files/spread-sheets for five hours straight.
Some person I don't know - The fighters from the Fringe series were pulled off an open source game art website, so thank you whoever did that.

Modding / Community Compilation Portrait Pack
« on: April 05, 2012, 06:44:51 PM »
(Please note, there's no portraits yet. I am currently making some myself, but I thought I'd go ahead and create the thread now, and see how you guys respond to the idea. Please read on before you dismiss. I'll also change this thread to be more professional if the idea is liked/etc. Fancy banner, pretty colors, credits section, informational sections, download links, all that good stuff.)

[I'm also going to remove this section and replace it with something more proper. If the idea is taken to.]
So anyway, I had a little idea that could work out pretty neatly for Starfarer as a whole, if it's liked.
Portraits? Who doesn't love them? Well, I certainly do. Nothing like a badass commander portrait to make you feel awesome while you're shredding the enemy into pieces...alright, so portraits aren't shown very prominently yet, aside from factions (which I hope to get in this pack as well). But that doesn't mean they won't be in future updates, and it'd be nice to have a much larger variety to choose from than the small amount of vanilla portraits we have, for when they are. Wouldn't you agree? So I'd like introduce a community project idea.

The Community Compilation Portrait Pack! *Ahem*

The general idea is. Make some portraits. Submit them to me. I'll add them to the mod pack, and list everyone who contributes with full unabridged credits (and no, I'm not going to feature myself prominently as the author of the pack or anything. It's a COMMUNITY project. I promise, though I will be controlling guidelines/standards to ensure the quality of the pack.). Especially in the read-me, where I'll list who made what. Basically, a community project for anyone with graphical talent to contribute to. You worry about making a portrait, and I shall add them to the game as well as give you credits as they are due. If you like the idea, give me a "Hey, that sounds cool." or whatever. And if you're interested in contributing, read "How to Contribute", "Guidelines", and "Standards."

Quote
How to Contribute

1. Please read "Guidelines" on how you should make your portrait, and "Standards" on what you should and should not do when making said portrait.
2. Make your portrait(s). Obviously, you'll need to be reasonably talented in the graphics department in either making them from scratch or adapting already-made portraits.
3. Once you're done, put your portrait(s) in a zip file and upload them to a file dump site like Dropbox/Rapidshare/etc.
4. Submit them to this project. Either PM me with the link to the download or post in the thread. I'd rather you PM me due to it keeping the thread cleaner and it's easier to manage.
5. If your portraits are of decent quality and follow the guidelines, congratulations! You've successfully contributed to the pack. Huzzah. I will take care of the rest.

Quote
Guidelines

Your portrait should fulfill the following qualities.

1. 128 x 128 dimensions
2. .PNG format
3. Transparent background (just the character, no background. Erase that out.)
4. Try to get them to blend in a little bit (it doesn't have to be perfect) with the vanilla (default game) portraits. Something that would fit in with Starfarer.

Quote
Standards

These are basically "rules" you need to follow if you're going to contribute to the pack.

1. Please TRY to Avoid Using Video Game Characters (At least well-known ones)
-Not just to avoid the miniscule chance of copyright infringement. But also because. You know. Originality. If you do use one, tell me where it's from. But I'd rather see original characters/stuff you make on your own/etc. Video game characters have a higher chance of being rejected.

2. Plagiarism Is Bad, Mmkay?
-I don't mind if the artwork was not yours originally if you get the author's permission to adapt/use it. But don't just steal something off Deviant Art and pass it off as completely made by you. And credit the authors of the original work.

(There's more I wanted to add, but currently escape me at the moment. Will add those later.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. And do please comment on the idea.
