I think a really banal "sunless seas"*-esque type ambition, like scrounging up fifty million credits to get on the board of a terraforming company or something before "retiring" could be interesting.

Suggestions / Re: Contacts/Officers Expansion
« on: July 29, 2023, 01:16:17 AM »
Contacts are such an interesting part of the gameplay loop. I'd love to see them expanded, and I'm really glad you wrote up some ideas.
"Contacts have a limited sphere of influence (i.e their system/a few neighbouring systems), this would help balance out the rewards" I love playing around the core worlds, so having more areas for regional idiosyncrasies to develop is awesome.

Something I'd be curious about is after turning a contact into a priority, a way to help them advance their career - and consequently their importance. Maybe make it a story point quest like the historian's blue prints tips.

"Non-combat officer types that give bonuses to civilian hulls"
Also am really curious about this! What do you think this would look like? Another tab on the command screen? Something like fleet doctrine? Or like administrators that we can hire at different plants, but like biologists?

Suggestions / Re: How do we make crew losses matter?
« on: July 06, 2021, 01:54:38 AM »
If nothing else, I just wanted to echo everyone else mentioning the old crew experience system, and say that it was deeply edifying to grab a bunch of greenhorns from the bottom of chicomoztoc and turn them into battle-hardened spacers. I think a crew morale system sounds a bit too unwieldy, but it'd be great if any new system was able to recapture that narrative satisfaction

Blog Posts / Re: Writing Starsector

Wanted to second what Concrete (welcome!) said earlier in the thread because the gates interaction and the Gremlin description are pretty great.

The writing in starsector is somehow my favorite part of the game, David, so I dug the blog! glad to see a brigador shoutout in the footnotes. Will we get any brush-ins with Orcus Rao or Marshal Baikul Daud? What is to become of Chalcedon? &c super excited for the update!

The mod looks beautiful - congrats!! Just curious what the rebel union-class ship is based on. anyone know? tried to google that phrase, but didn't see anything.

Discussions / Ridiculous Avery Brooks never had his own ds9 movie
« on: November 06, 2020, 11:25:25 PM »
I'm in the middle of a ds9 rewatch (season 4ish) and Captain Sisko is just such a compelling lead. What a waste that paramount never gave him a movie to chew through! The father-son relationship between Sisko and Jake is so affecting on screen, but as an officer he can play wrothful and coldly ruthless so effortlessly and magnetically. Agh what a good series.

treasure-hunting mechanic could be interesting. Drop a bunch of credit bombs on a faction's university/research center/scrying computers, and they'll periodically outfit a tech-mining expedition for a planet in the outer sector. Fleet arrives, sets up temporary research colony where you can buy structures to influence the findings of the excavation: ai war artifacts, luddic texts, lost domain colony soda machines
Oh and you'll have to fend off uh pirates or mercenaries from rival powers. or something

Can't endorse enough the idea that there should be an intermediate step between starship captain to parvenu fleet commander backed by the industry of an entire planet. It's not a huge deal, but the jump in ambition is a bit jarring. Maybe you could be awarded a temporary custodianship of an erstwhile core-pather world as a politically acceptable compromise candidate as a resolution of a midgame storyline. (in a way that demonstrates the sector powers learned their lessons after the Askonian Crisis!)
Investing in faction industries is a really interesting angle that I think could be really cool if fleshed out in a way that was a bit different from personal colony build-up. Like in addition to credits, you're establishing yourself in the higher echelons of the faction government and getting more specialized quests? hmm

Blog Posts / Re: Personal Contacts

I'm super stoked for this. Anything that makes my pilot more of their own entity in the perseus sector with their own stakes and interests as opposed to a personal avatar of antimatter fueled destruction is fantastic.

Also, Alex, an aspect of the dev diaries I've always appreciated is you laying out your thought process and why you've decided to make things the way they are. Thanks for sticking with this project. You and the modding scene have made a very, very special thing here.

Lore, Fan Media & Fiction / Re: The Mayasura Crisis
« on: March 14, 2020, 02:28:42 AM »
Always one of my favorite Starsector stories. How do we all reckon Mairaath being a part of the Persean League at game start? Maybe the Hegemony never intended to conquer Mairaath, and it was a purely punitive expedition. Alternatively, maybe they did intend to annex Mairaath, but the ruination of the world was too extensive to govern so they merely patched a few things up on a modest, inadequate humanitarian effort before withdrawing. And down the line, in a rare feat of League unity and even rarer altruism, the Persean League lead a cycles-long stabilization mission which lead to the Mairaath becoming a full-member planet.

These are amazing! I'm always a sucker for CGR sympathy. The image of a music school on Wairon is really funny, and the picture of Hegemony remnants and Knights of Ludd retaining battlefield honor is really stirring. The CGR taking on the administration of Mairaath as penance is moving to me; I'm really hoping there's a path in the ~story~ of 1.0 where more just elements of mainline Luddicism prevail and the Church makes a priority of ousting the Path from the core. Which is to say I'd love to see your take on Chalcedon if you return to this haha.

Also just really highlighting the fantastic writing for Gilead. "That such a world could be found again is the promise that humanity may be redeemed." MMh, *chef's kiss*

Fantastic thread. Thanks for posting.

Mods / Re: [0.9a] Mayasuran Navy 8.1.4

Really enjoy the mod. Love the ship designs, sincerely really love the concept -- thank-you. At the risk of being someone that hasn't read the previous replies very closely, am wondering if a re-envisioned, never-downed Mayasuran system is on the way?

Something I've been really partial to lately is the idea of the Hegemony appointing you as a temporary civilian administrator for like Yama or something after its nominal head of government is ousted in the aftermath of a scandal. Story-wise I'm not sure it holds up or would even be desirable in teaching mechanics, but I do think it'd be interesting for there to be different ways, like limited stints, for the player to engage with colony heading other than necessarily *starting* one.

General Discussion / Sweeping for Pather bases?
« on: December 27, 2018, 09:54:25 PM »
Hi everyone,

Hope everyone's chugging some good nog and only getting mildly sick from it.

I just wanted to ask if there was a particular rhyme or method for finding Pather bases. I'm trying a "New Old Maxios" run so the planets I'm shepherding are pretty close to the core, but I don't think proximity is any clue and I don't think there's an equivalent docking event to locate them like with pirate bases. I also think they do eventually pop up in the intel screen when the other factions post about them, but I was also hoping there might be a quicker way to drum them out.

Thanks!
