Blog Posts / Re: Skills and Story Points
« on: July 08, 2019, 11:36:39 AM »
While reading I was at first like "man, less levels again" ... but at the end of the blog post I'm quite intrigued.
Of course I'll have to play with this to be sure, but thinking about it for a bit, it sounds pretty good.

The story points open up pretty much endless possibilities and you never really stop progressing, but not in a broken way.

Bug Reports & Support / [Linux] Please add shebang to starsector.sh
« on: July 19, 2018, 07:54:29 AM »
I made a Lutris installer for Starsector, but because the shell script for starting the game on Linux is missing the shebang, Lutris just prints an error (apparently a limitation of Python, according to https://github.com/lutris/lutris/issues/306).

For now I worked around that by setting the game executable to jre_linux/bin/java with the relevant arguments, but it'd make it simpler if you could just add
Code
#!/bin/sh
as first line in the starsector.sh script.

General Discussion / Re: Why MUST we play the tutorial first?
« on: May 14, 2017, 04:09:02 PM »
I really don't see why people are making such a big issue of this. Unless you have some ritual of reinstalling the game every time you want to start a playthrough, it's really a trivial issue. Like treating it as some sort of mortal sin is just... baffling. Truly baffling.

Not reinstalling, but I do delete old saves.
Though if the game will remember that I've done it with the next version, I'm fine with it.

It's a 30 minute tutorial which goes over two new and important campaign features and one important item. All your arguements as to why 'an experienced player' wouldn't need to go through it at least once are baseless, and even if, the 30 minute tutorial is an easy thing for anyone that has played before.

If you /want/ the hard start, just start a new game after saving the tutorial character. If you're moving installs, you should know that the game looks for a save before unlocking the non-tutorial start.

If the tutorial were three hours of the experience and glitchy to progress through, i could understand the issues but as it stands? There is no reason to whine and moan.

Sure there is a reason. It's annoying and pointless to have a forced tutorial.

Same as Dri, combat 0, the others maxed.

Can I or can't I use Java 8? And should I? Will is cause problems?
I've been using Java 8 all the time, so far without issues.

The Neutrino Detector makes it a easier though not foolproof to find those obscure probes. It requires 1 point in the Sensors skill in the Technology Aptitude and costs 1 Volatile per day upkeep.

For me it's actually harder with the neutrino detector, because it's always leading me nowhere and I end up going further away from the probe.
Easier to just fly around more or less randomly until I get it.

Edit: All is good made a new game and skipped tutorial, :D Awesome update btw

That only works if you haven't deleted your previous saves, apparently. :/

Can't wait to try that playstyle myself. :)

this game is one of the reasons i dont support any form of early access anymore.

Wow. I'm just trying to wrap my head around this. Completely the opposite. SS is one of the prime examples of early access done right. You get a -very- playable game at discount, not a bag full of air and promises. And you know he's going to finish it. Even if it takes a long time.

That's my take on Starsector as well. It was the first game I bought in development and because it's done so good I also started buying other in development games.

Those aren't really my genres, but for example Warsow is a really fun shooter (that's free and open source even).
Shadow Warrior was also great.

No idea about racing and fighting games. I have Race the Sun from some bundle, that was alright.

Right. It's just the game's way of saying, "don't have that many ships, ok?" Intentionally gamey and without any in-lore justification. It's a small and clear rule, and seems a fair tradeoff for the amount of cleanup it allows. It *is* configurable through settings.json, though.

A purist wouldn't run closed-source games, either.

The extent of audio hardware support is "there's audio" and the extent of video hardware support is workable but buggy and less than performant. Linux apps are perfectly fine and I didn't miss Windows apps at all. But for a gaming desktop it's always going to be second choice.
There's a pretty impressive list of supported sound cards here.
With video card drivers I've made the best experience with the proprietary Nvidia drivers, which have been rock solid for ages.
