The images in the OP made it pretty clear the 'HD' versions of those images were just outright superior. It looks like it's a higher res source image, not upscaled at all. Really amazing.
Unfortunately, it seems there's a few of negative issues with the mod, as per other posters. Some may be fixed, I don't know; only the 'planet aura' is in the changelog.

It looks like the nebula texture is made for a specific resolution instead of the entire screen.. at least, in the tactical battles. Whether this is the only texture like this, I don't know, haven't played long enough to test more. During that battle I managed to have it progress more and more off the screen.
The pack also adds a hang when entering any system. The hang time varies based on how many assets are in the system (the 13MB 4k backgrounds delaying a lot). It's a bit jarring when the base game is smooth without delays.
Personally, I think I'll just keep the illustration images for now, solely because of the hang when entering systems.
