Title: free recording software?
Post by: PCCL on May 15, 2013, 08:59:15 PM
hi all

so for an english project, a few friend and I are doing an reenactment of Shakespeare's Macbeth in Minecraft

The project will be presented in the form of a video, recorded by a player in creative mode and voiced over skype

what would be the best software to use to record both the video and sound?

thanks in advance

gunny

I've heard that dxtory is rather good and some GPU overclocking programs have screen capture built in.

I really don't think a good free screen capture program exists. Trust me, I've looked quite a bit for one myself. I'm no professional, but I'm pretty certain your choices are down to Fraps and Dxtory. There are 2 basic differences between them.

Also, if you'll be recording Minecraft, I would suggest using a tool called Sizer (http://www.brianapps.net/sizer/) which allows you to have fine control over window sizes. To record at 720p, I set my window at 1298x765 because Sizer counts the borders. It's likely to be slightly different for you, so I would test it just by starting around there and taking screenshots in game and looking at their resolutions.

If you need to upload or edit the video I've got more tools you can use. I hope this helped.

ya, I just found fraps too, probably gonna be using that, dxtory sounds good but apparently it's hard to use and I'm not looking for great quality (school project is school)

will look into sizer when there's time

thanks very much guys :)

Camstudio is also a free recording software.

I'd recommend just buying fraps, it's worth the money and it would benefit you on the long run. It's got superior quality, just remember to encode and compress your videos with Handbrake or you'll have 300GBs worth of videos in no time

well... thing is I'm not gonna be recording stuff on a regular basis... this is just for the one project and then i don't know when I'll need it again

definitely not worth spending the money on it

Hmmm, if it's just a one time thing, go with Camstudio? I've never used it but it's meant to be rather decent

Camstudio isnt the best, but its pretty decent, and its good enough for a school project, or for a person who doesnt use recording software much.

Source: i have used it before.
