Title: Will enemy fleet crew die if they don't have supplies ?
Post by: Andrius227 on January 27, 2013, 02:17:33 PM
So, i wanted to capture a Paragon, destroyed all other ships in it's fleet, took the Paragon down to like 10% hull, then retreated. I followed him around, he repaired most of it's hull, then stopped. Guess he ran out of supplies. I attacked him again, took him down to like 10% hull again, retreated. Now i'm wondering, will he start losing crew if he don't have supplies or something ? Or is it a waste of time to follow him hoping his crew would die so i can capture it ?

If he's out of supplies, he'll start to have accidents.  These can kill crew.  They can also damage or destroy ships.  So... it's rather a gamble at the point you've described.

There's one interesting trick to seeing if a ship is crewed or not.  Uncrewed ships always show up on the map as "regular" crew level - so if a ship has been through enough fights to count as veteran or elite, and then falls back to regular, you can be confident that it's no longer crewed.

Also, if your cruising around in a hound and that Paragon/Conquest/System Defense Fleet is fleeing from you, Merry Christmas.

Unless they sabotage.

Each time you take the Paragon down to 10% hull, it should be losing a significant proportion of its crew.
Having done it twice already, I'm surprised it can still fight.

I've tried this tactic a ton, it never seems to work. You can scum save like 5+ fights/waiting periods/repeat to kill off crew and they never seem to be low enough to surrender.

Maybe my luck is somehow just terrible but you're time would be better spend watching paint dry then relying on the AI to slowly die off as im not sure it even can :P

Seems to me that each ship has the exact minimal skeleton crew that is used for calculation of how many crew members lost their lives during combat. So if a ship has 50 minimal crew requirement, but can carry 200 more and set to carry 100% extra crew (in faction file) - it can survive quite a lot of brutal fights by simply re-crewing after each engagement.

I may be wrong though...

the paragon is worst ship for this capture tactic - it have very low supply cargo and big crew. Usually you need to reduce ship you want to capture to 10% from 100% hull 3-4 times to kill off all available crew but in case of single paragon - ship dont have available supplies onboard for 3-4 90% hull repairs. If you catch single ship without crew it will be 100% capture chance with all weapons and hull systems intact provided ship was not captured/repaired before.
