Title: COFFEE!
Post by: Hyph_K31 on July 22, 2012, 09:25:37 AM
Pure random going on here (as if you'd expect anything else from me...).

Do you think starfarers have coffee? or something similar? 'Cause if you're cursing around in a sleepy ol' venture and you get attacked by some nastly space gangsta, you're really gonna need to wake up fast!

This in no way aids the game, its just pure random feel free to totally ignore me.

Does sound more about "off-topic". Got the boards wrong, maybe?

Pfff, coffee is life in general for most people. ;D
Not me.  I crawl out of bed in the morning and shake off the sleep.  No coffee required for me. :)
Same if I were attacked by a bunch of pirates.  Flip on the Mining Blaster and there's no problem.

Same here! I tend to dose a bit when i wake up... for some weird reason it helps me wake up.

And yeah, this is more of an off topic thread.

But, but, it has no caffine

Drink a few gallons of that and snort a little cocaine and I'd be happy

id imagine that starfarers have something more akin to a hypospray from star trek that keeps you alert in the event you need to be awake.

however i presume that like on star trek people will still choose to use alternate methods such as coffee i know my captains all drink coffee :D

or wait what if coffee plants went extinct? i for one would be very sad.

Then they shall drink the strongest tea! (Which technically has more caffeine than coffe). And if that is extinct, then they take caffeine pills!

I haven't slept in two days, and I've had two flour tortillas and half a cup of rice for food.

Coffee is for the weak.

(Besides, we've got... probably two hundred dollars worth of tea occupying an entire cupboard. One of the perks of being like, two-thirds of the tea club of our school.)

You know, Drinking caffeine (in tea OR coffee, or anything else for that matter...) increases your resistance to it. Meaning, if you drink too much before long you'll need to drink more for it to have to same effect.

Which is the main reason I don't drink coffee, only tea because there's less of it. ( I know tea LEAVES contain way more caffeine than coffee, but thats the leaves, not the drink.)

So I would assume that starfarers don't consume caffeine, because they'll end up costing more than it's worth.

It's not so much a resistance ("resist" implies that your body is trying to reject it) as it is a tolerance (your body comes to tolerate the drug and its effects).

As with pretty much every drug, the more you use it, the more of it you need to use, because your body starts adapting to having it in such a quantity with such a regularity.

(This is also one of the reasons why withdrawals happen - once your body gets used to having something, taking it away tends to have detrimental effects.)

So to get the same (or more) effect once your body has built up a tolerance, you either need to use the drug more often, or in larger quantities (or both).

(For me, caffeine makes me sleepy. With milk [i.e., caffè latte, although I seem to tolerate half-and-half perfectly fine], it makes me nauseous, what with my being mildly lactose intolerant.)

I chose the word "resistance" quite purposefully. Caffeine speeds up neural transmissions by attaching to the Axon of a neurone. Over time the neurones will build up a sort of "shield" the prevents the caffeine from bonding with the axon. A resistance. Even if you stop taking in caffeine, the resistance you've build up will stay as long has the neurones remain intact.

Maybe starfarers buy neural implants that stimulate brain activity when they need it most, for example a heated battle against a pirate fleet. I would think they would try to keep their systems relatively free from chemicals, the reason should be obvious.

I chose the word "resistance" quite purposefully.
Then you're doing it wrong. Drug resistance (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drug_resistance) has an entirely different meaning from drug tolerance (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drug_tolerance).

Caffeine is a drug. Since we're talking about the consumption of caffeine, and the tolerance of its effects, the "drug" is implied.

idgi

(Or rather, idg the relevance of that video? I don't recall saying that drugs are bad. Drugs are in fact, pretty damn good. They fight infections, diseases, and in general, keep people alive. Drug abuse, on the other hand, is pretty bad, but abuse in general is pretty bad. I mean, it's abuse. The word alone has pretty negative connotations.)

Sorry, I don't think I explained what I meant. When I said resistance, I was talking about the actual physical protection a neurone uses to protect from caffeine. I wasn't really talking about drug resistance (although thinking about it I was a little but).

I also chose the word resistance over tolerance because the caffeine still has an effect, but you need to consume more and more to keep that effect the same.

PS: griff, why do you have --Griffenhart at the end of each post? it would be easier to add if to your signature.

Consumption of any drug that has an effect (are there even drugs that don't have effects?) will have an effect, even if it's minor.

but you need to consume more and more to keep that effect the same.
Er, congratulations on defining drug tolerance, like I did earlier?

Eh, I'll take my caffeine in the forms of copious amounts of energy drinks. Sure I now suffer withdrawl symptoms (headaches, difficulty concentrating, etc.) when I've not had caffeine for a few hours, but it's not much of a problem, really
Title: Re: COFFEE!

(headaches, difficulty concentrating, etc.)

Remember that caffeine is a powerful, ummmm, diruretic. ;D That causes significant dehydration, which will aggravate loss of water in brain tissues all the more, which causes headaches all by itself. It's annoying to have to drink plenty of water after enjoying either coffee or tea, but I hate potentially having my productivity impaired by persistent headaches. Learned that lesson decades ago. ;)

In the fashion of this thread being a suggestion, which it obviously isn't at this point :P, it's only recently that coffee was a common place, affordable product. Cocoa beans are not the easiest crop to cultivate and it used to be that only the richest people had the exquisite luxury of eating chocolate and drinking coffee.
Something tells me the average Hegemony Mechanic can't quite afford it.

-snip- Something tells me the average Hegemony Mechanic can't quite afford it. -snip-

Indeed! I should think that anyone who is not in a position of importance (the afore mentioned mechanic) would probably make due with some sort of caffeine concentrate pill/power (Snuff!). Although it would probably be synthetic caffeine, or some other cheap drug with the same effect. whilst the higher ups (like the tritach CEO) get to sip on their imported Terran coffee (I doubt humans would ever leave earth (as a race) without taking coffee beans with them.

Hmmm, that would mean if would be very lucrative to be a coffee merchant/producer. And because of the high value of coffee beans, they would probably be very popular with pirates.

Black-market coffee  8)

And knowing pirates, they probably grind it into powder and mix a little rust in :D

I am hoping for coffee and other sorts of things to be products in the economy at a later date.

EVE may be boring as sin but they got trading and production right.

Who know what kinds of horrible space bacteria you might come across.

Since "the Sector" that is featured in this game has only had a human presence in it for a mere handful of decades prior to the stargates going off-line, and that there are tantalizing passing references to substantial limits on the availablility of vital food and potable water on account of not enough agro-worlds being fully terraformed prior to stargate loss, it therefore seems really unlikely to me that coffee beans grown as a cash crop / luxury item are going to exist here in anything other than tiny quantities, or at all. With so frighteningly few planets being able to grow the foodstuffs for even basic sustenance, "Starfarer java" is going to be waaaaay down the list.

I hope to be proven wrong about this by later unveiling of the main body of Ivaylo's game lore, but at present I'm none too optimistic. A cosmos without coffee is hardly worth living in -- no wonder the Hegemony's system defense fleet is so cranky. ::)

Upon learning about the lore related (really loosely) the subject of coffee, I agree that the presence of coffee in the Corvus sector is very unlikely. But what about chemical alternatives, or perhaps hydroponics?
