Title: Holy art batman!
Post by: sdmike1 on July 11, 2012, 08:25:51 AM
does anyone know where i could find some concept art that shows the Z-axis of the ships?

There isn't that much out there, but your best bet is to go looking through the very oldest blog posts.  For example:
http://fractalsoftworks.com/2010/11/29/art-ship-design-the-onslaught/#more-145
http://fractalsoftworks.com/2011/01/25/modern-ship-designs/#more-160
and maybe http://fractalsoftworks.com/2010/12/23/pew-pew/

Edit: and it looks like that's all you're likely to find - see http://fractalsoftworks.com/2011/05/10/assembling-the-fleet/#more-649
Quote from: David
I’m taking a slightly different approach to ships now that I’ve had some more experience drawing them. At first I drew perspective views of the ships as 3d objects; this isn’t  necessary because the ships will always be seen as top-down sprites. So for the concepts above, I’ve drawn the ships much as they’ll appear in the final game in terms of silhouette and color, though of course these are painted rather than pixeled at this point.

You forgot this one:

It's certainly not all the ships but it is something.

Is that an Eagle in the background(the ship that looks like it is leading the pack), also are those Valkyries or some other ship?

Looks like a falcon or an eagle behind the lowest ship

Title: Re: concept art
Post by: heskey30 on July 13, 2012, 12:04:08 PM
I think it is an eagle, a falcon is probably not so thick. But a strange thing about the "valkyries" - if you look close some of them look different. There seem to be two different types.

There's quite a difference between purely functional concept art and the highly polished promotional "concept art" one tends to see released by game companies. What I'm going to show is absolutely the former with no time spent making it look nice. It's my sketchbook, in other words. But hey, since interest was expressed, I'll show a bit of it.

(And maybe I'll just make this into a blog post, at that.)

I've decided I would actually pay a good amount of money (£75+) for a Starfarer concept art book of ANY art. Doesn't have to be that concept art that is made for the public, just anything.

EDIT: The idea on the weapon radii UI (yellow for midline, orange for low tech, blue for high tech) sound actually like a really neat touch. Maybe make it blue for energy, yellow for fragmentation, orange for HE, and white for kinetic?

I wouldn't say that. They're 2 different things, remember? Concept art is a concept of what might come about, and as Alex said, no design survives contact with implementation.

Lookin' at that Atlas there, are there any plans to have engine "smog" of sorts along with the flame-jets? I think low-tech ships would look fantastic if they were spewing out an unknown residue as they choked along ;D

It sure looks like a hound but upper turret location is not right - it must be on left side of the ship. Definitely awesome looking art.

I tend to flip paintings back and forth to make sure the perspective doesn't drift. Right now it's flipped. (Though I may just put the turret on the wrong side to troll you guys ;) )

Here, we see the artist at work in his natural habitat, Photoshop, while sipping his prey, coffee, and creating works of art for many different games.

:)

But seriously, on the topic of your art, David, what's the game you enjoy making art for the most?  It doesn't have to be Starsector unless you sincerly belive it.

Yeah, I see more bionics happening. These are dangerous times and certainly not everyone has the wealth or tech to properly re-grow all the bits they lost.

The Soldier
Haha - as the artist, I'm allowed to be like "Okay, here's what I'd look like as a ruggedly handsome space captain."

I do enjoy Starf.. Starsector the most. Two reasons:

1. I love drawing spaceships. Like, I find it ridiculously fun. At Gaslamp I'm the Art Director and/or "Chief Creative Officer" and manage a team of artists. They're great guys, but management is stressful as I have to keep all these other people organized and on-track and critique their work and make their schedules and so on. At the end of the day what I really love to do is draw stuff, not manage people.

2. Control. I basically draw things for Starsector, Alex says "cool, I'll put it in" and we're done.
I think we get along very well in terms of aesthetics; I remember the first ships I drew -- I sent them over for feedback and Alex was like "perfect!" so I'm like... Okay, right on! I'll just keep doing this! Over at Gaslamp, on the one hand I'm art directing through a team of three people doing the primary work on a 3d game (while I -- not a 3d artist -- do back-up texturing, UI, and promo art) rather than doing it all myself directly, and on the other hand I need to compromise my vision with what the two other owning partners want to do. So even though I'm a 1/3rd partner in Gaslamp Games, I have way more creative control in what I draw for Alex.
Also spaceships.

How often do you submit work to him? Do you get an email from him saying that he wants half a dozen fighter designs by the next week or something silly like that, or do you just send him concept art every now and then and see what he has to say about it?

Speaking of which.... any new top secret ships being developed that you can tease with?  ;)

@David:
Do you have plans to utilize the new decorative weapons in new ships or even incorporate them in old designs? I imagine it might be quite hard to do more than blinking lights without upsetting the look of a ship that was not made for moving parts.

Aye to that as well. :)

And I read on an early blog post, wasn't the Wolf one of your first ships that you created?  It's my favorite design. :) Also has a place in my heart as the first frigate I usually start off with.

Yup, one of the first. I had a notion for what I wanted it to be and made exactly that, though it did go through a couple revisions, first to add weapon attachment points (because we originally didn't have them, if you can believe that!) then to adjust the number of turrets.

It could also be blamed the shop interface's screen reflecting the what was around it thus mirroring the image.

already done ;D

anyone know what's that thing to the right of the hound? (in the unflipped picture)
Bleh. I take it back. It's a twisted abomination and it gives me the willies.

Not sure. I'd guess it's some kind of ship. Looks really tiny.

It looks like a Lasher.  Raised command room in the center, the engine pattern on the back seems to match the Lasher as well.

if that's a lasher, david has another thing about scale coming......

see that supply crate under it? Use that as reference to the 2 next to the crewman giving his captain the finger (is that what he's doing)

I'm gonna guess either spare parts or a broadsward... some sort of fighter anyhow...

ANALYSIS OF LOWER IMAGE
The bottom most image features what can be seen as a set of derelict shapes and scrap metal freely floating throughout space. The title of the image 'space_wreck.jpg' probably means that along with this quote at the top of the page 'cropped down to little scenes to show for game event choices and so on' that this is what most probably will be seen should the player either destroy every ship in the enemy fleet or lose their fleet. The derelict objects in the picture are very clearly just random pieces, for they do not match up to any weapon or ship in Starf-Sector.

Based on the appearance of the Hound, the space junk, we can be primarily assured of a much different handling of the current communication system, but the Hound raises the question of there being much bigger fish in the ocean, if you catch my drift.
