not to rain on your parade, but do we really need another star wars mod in the works?

http://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=969.0

Seems like offering your help with that mod would be a better idea?

I'll highlight the gameplay video better, as you missed the point ;).

To clarify: the mod will have *nothing* to do with Star Wars. It'll be a universe where huge titans (with 100+ turrets) clash on the battlefield. The Titans sprite are not specifically related to vanilla and can quite possibly coming from anywhere, as long as they fit into the overall style.

If anyone find a big sprite (up to 3000x3000) I can see if I can convert in a mighty Titan-class.

In the end there'll be a lot of "small" factions, each characterized by 1-2 titan-class type of ships.

That's good...

I do miss the feeling of ponderous spaceships from other games

Is the framerate good tho?

Also since ur going for near unlimited range... Is there a way to zoom out farther than we could right now?

I'm thinking of two things that might make this a little tough. The first is that I don't know if the HUD in battle has room for all of those weapons. Second thing is I don't know if the AI can handle controlling so many weapons. It still sounds super awesome though.
Title: Re: Project Titan
Post by: Uomoz on May 09, 2012, 10:45:37 AM
The AI is perfect for the task, while the ship it's almost uncontrollable in the hands of a player (the 100 weapon arcs makes it a lagfest). But I'm fine with it, they are "boring" to fly anyway (so slow), the player should have more fun flying a fast and armored corvettes\fighter.

Thinking again: you can set a big part of the weapons on auto-fire and use the most damaging 10\15. That way is playable.

To anyone interested: Any big sprite provided will have a chance to get into the mod, so don't be shy :D

I love the idea behind this! Giant ships slugging it out across the map, taking hit after hit whilst completely demolishing everything that they come across, Just what i want in a game.

Can't wait for this to get more developed etc :D

It's perfectly fine.
It could be a more Elite-ish and smaller Titan. Korrak is a very Old and low tech Hull after all (like in vanilla lore about battleships).

there is dev mode yes... maybe, but i think without its would be impossible D:

then... about refit!................

Yeah you're gonna have to figure out how to equip each of these ships. It'll be a b**ch to try to choose 300 different weapons. Maybe pre-made variants?

Instead lots of individual guns just have gun batteries and pretend they are made up of X amount of guns.
Title: Re: Project Titan
Post by: Kalinin on May 11, 2012, 12:22:41 AM
The problem with abandoning individual weapons is that they'd lose the ability to track independently, effectively making everything an AoE weapon. It would also narrow the fields of fire and ruin the awesome sight of lasers and bullets going everywhere.

I really think this mod has great potential, especially if we have lots of little pew-pewey fighters flying around, for the sake of atmosphere, especially considering the inspiration.

Title: Re: Project Titan
Post by: Uomoz on May 11, 2012, 01:14:31 AM
With 150 guns on a ship it'll be nearly impossible to manage refitting xD. I'll make tons of variants for each Titan, leaving OPs for hull mods (the real customization) so the player can have meaningful choices.

The Battery concept is not that bad, but has a big flaw. If you stick together a lot of guns they still rotate on a single central point so it'd be awkward.

Well big quadruple gun turrets and such would be singular and player controllable while medium and small should be big and small numbers of weapons linked together with some sort of FCS.

The medium and small can be invisible (like star wars) or be fixed sideways (what is this the 17th century?) although fixed missile batteries would be acceptable.

Whats the limit on the ship size, cause if im making the borg it will be in 1px > 1meter meaning 2 or 3 3000 px sized tactical cubes melting your ships

same with the Starbases.

das use of AUTOMATIC FIRAAAAAAAAAA since well yea they shoot the closest target when even if the same group of the other broadside shoot something else

like well since its titan..... you could do a super weapon ( >_> .... this is not EVE related... * whistle* ) which could be fire once or twice depending on the battle lenght

;D
Title: Re: Project Titan
Post by: Sörre on May 11, 2012, 08:17:10 AM
Maybe you could do some coding if it possible, so you got a turret or a battery and you just pick one weapon you want to equip and let the game fill up the rest.

One way to solve the refitting if you got enough of the same weapon.

I think it's not doable, at least not with my current scripting skills (and as far as I know).

I definetly dig this titans idea, i think Alex could do something along the same lines as godzilla, earthquakes or giant spiders were for SimCity - sometimes a titan would enter the star system alone and it would take an end-game fleet to take it out... maybe. Now imagine taking it out and actually being able to board it. but needing like 300 marines with losses :D

This being in the vanilla game would ruin it for me, i think. Let's keep it to mods, please?

I really like what you're doing, except that the Korrac is ugly. Sorry, mate.

Bigger, higher quality images can be found; or at least the smaller ones can be blown up less violently.

Eh, maybe not by much. My attempt.

Basically I wouldn't suggest using this method, especially because the weapon mounts get blown up too.

Title: Re: Project Titan
Post by: WKOB on May 11, 2012, 04:14:53 PM
I gotcha.

Unfortunately I think you're going to have to decide between blurry and undetailed.

I could sketch some really big ships and give them overlays but detailed desk top sized ships is time consuming work.

I'll go with scaled-up vanilla ships for now. I'd like an *awesomize* filter on gimp. There ain't :(.

The best thing would be an awesome and huge work of kitbashing. But I'm not the expert on the board. I never tried.

So I can quite tell from your video. How exactly are doing weapons? Not visible at all? What about massive turrets?

Anyway, I did a thing. I'm just asking because I'm wondering if it needs weapon 'mounts' like a regular ship.

http://imgur.com/vMNXq (http://imgur.com/vMNXq)

Getting more intricate is doable, this was just a quick 'what-do-you-think-of-the-idea' typeofing.
Title: Re: Project Titan

Don't touch my PeWees.

Man you bring me good memories.

Weapons: working right now on invisible imprecise light PD rotary cannons, small to med turrets as the main broadside weapons (as in the video) with sprite and everything, swarm missiles racks (symilar to the videos but quite a lot faster to compensate against the appereance of PD), and 2-3 super weapons mounts (very diverse for each Titan). Guns don't strictly require slots for the sprites.

Anyway, about the image: idea OK (TA fanboi here), I hope it will fit with the Korra blurry style, otherwise I can't guarantee it'll go in.

Post by: WKOB on May 11, 2012, 05:04:20 PM

As I read your post, my tired brain wacky-parsed it such that I had a mental image of the Starfarer version of those nested Russian babushka dolls. Imagine a capital ship that fires a cruiser, which in turn fires a destroyer, who launches a frigate that deploys a fighter that gives you a mere love-tap with some harmless creampuff of a gun that does just one and only one damage point, period. I think I need to get to bed earlier tonight. ::)

A damn good looking RTS, if your speaking about the first version of it, the second is... a little different I've heard.

Total Annihilation is probably most know for its unique GUI, and man what a sweet GUI it has, all other RTS games could learn so much from it.

Supreme Commander is the spiritual successor to Total Annihilation, sharing it's different take on resources, as well as scale of fights.

My Total Annihilation is currently modded, to have this.

Not bad for a game made back in '98, right?

You. Give me that mod. Naow.

Totally WIP, but I like where this is going. I have an official artist now, updating OP and title.

You mentioned you wanted some more sprites, take a look at this from another mod thread:

Spoiler
here is it what it would look like if made in scale

While it may be stupid to outright use that thing (as this is not a BattlestarGalactica-themed mod), it may be useful for kitbashing due to it's size and amount of detail.

Holy hell. It took me this long to realise I could make Stargazer in this... : D
...unless I couldn't. Whaddya think, 2,400KM Leviathan pushing it?
EDIT: I could default to the 900KM Endless Night, or perhaps some rather old Koltheki and Overworld capitals.... Probably the 5KM+ ones.

...the current Era sees most battleships at about 50KM, Dreadnoughts can be anywhere from 50KM to 750KM dependant on use, Leviathans are the experimental super heavies that basically WTFPWN everything.

Dunno if this has been pointed out yet, but let me chime in:

The larger the ship, the harder the time the game has in creating significant enough damage textures. As I'm tinkering with the idea of adding in starbases in my mod (eventually, if Alex doesn't add them into the game first), they had to be scaled properly; 2048x2048. However, while the procedural damage textures show up fine on a ship that's a 10th of the size, the starbase can take 250K damage and explode with some crispy edges and an overall intact center. Of course, since I do believe the main idea behind your mod is large ships in general, it might be best to boost the damage radius on any and all weapons.

Just a thought.

Post by: silentstormpt on June 17, 2012, 06:53:16 AM
Yeah, ive created the 2500px Borg cube to be used by NPCs only, and yet it should be 500px longer per side but its so massive when it spawns on the battlefield, your smaller ships spawn inside the cube and do massive dmg to both them and the cube, also you cant zoom out enough...

Project Titan is a Total Conversion I was thinking about in the last few weeks. After finishing a bunch of Uni exams I decided to start the whole thing. It will mostly feature *huge* ships (very slow and clumsy), a lot of broadside combat, no shields and almost limitless weapon range on all weapons. It's mostly inspired to the Total Annihilation universe and feel.

So i made this video (http://youtu.be/fMuZ9KNkYqM) as a preview of the overall feel of the mod. (the sprite is horribly low-res, but it's just a preview after all).

On a side note, this stuff pushes the engine limits *a lot*. You'll need some powerful PC to play :).

Official coder: Uomoz.

Official artist: Austupaio.

Use of TA map textures is... interesting, as a concept, but I'm not sure it works quite so well 'on paper'.

In the end, I wasn't able to find any decent quality high-res sprites and I like Austupaio's art. (also the idea of TA go well together with the concept of the mod)

Seen that page and while yes I've used it for inspiration for my more normally sized sprites (not in this thread) the fact of the matter is that Uomoz wants gigantic images. I'd be more than happy to try a suggested method for accomplishing something that would look not totally bland once turned into a >12002 ship.

Yeah, you need devmode zoom to fly a Titan. But that's not the purpose of the mod, you shouldn't be flying them (it's not really doable with the game engine).

what about making i yeah like groups so it functions as a triple quad machinegun that fire's in burst's or a twelve barreled cannon then there would only be 1 arc and it wouldnt take 5 years to outfit the ship :) the problem is just... idk if it is possible :(

Hitting the "¬" key, the one next to the numbers above QWERTY turns off weapon ranges. Strangely, F7-9 on my laptop also toggle the weapon ranges, which is wierd, because by default, they're actually the volume controls for the laptop and you need to press the Fn key before they work like normal F keys.

Spriters: Mid\Good Kitbash skill. I need to build new factions, and eventually their Titans. Next one will be a High Tech one so apply if you feel interested in lazor ships. Sprites are usually very small:

That's pretty sweet. Just curious, because I might throw one together for your approval, how much did you shrink the default ships, roughly, before/after kitbashing?

Everything except Titans is 1:1\4 compared to vanilla. Titans use 1:1 parts but should be at least as big as a vanilla capital (to be the smallest Titan).

New Alpha version. A much more balanced version, with a new Titan (Elate's Aegis) that's still WIP yet awesome.

Anyone can pretty much drop any good kitbash they made here and i'll convert it into a Titan (Titan class will depend with the dimension) and if they provide any non-Titan class ships i can reduce their dimensions to Sub Capital class ships (1\4 of vanilla). I appreciate any style as long as it fits in the general style (no cartoony for example).

It may not be up to snuff for a mini titan, but depending on what you want to do with ( such as say no ) I can bash it larger or reduce to fit sub titan.

Post by: Uomoz on September 24, 2012, 08:31:16 AM
Ty for your submission Flash!

I like it but it should be like 25% bigger to fit into the smallest Titan class ;). Also there's a precise rule about the number of weapon slots: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AofJdPw8jIWGdDRWRGVBdFdVVU51RFktbHp2R3NwR2c#gid=0. I can add you to the chart permissions so you can edit your Titan stats yourself (using the function that calculate the balance of it), otherwise you could go with a basic 5\15 smalls & 1\2 large depending on the militarization of the vessel. (this means you should edit the sprite to have that number of turrets slots, and yeah there are no "mediums").

You can add me on skype for clarification: Uomoz87
Title: Re: Project Titan by Uomoz & Elate
Post by: FlashFrozen on September 24, 2012, 09:15:02 AM
should be a simple switch of the medium turrets to smalls, though might have to get rid of the missiles or something... else I'd have 14 smalls,

Mmm, is there any guide about subsystems?

just a little tidbit on the goog.doc for the shields, should the 1.4 really cost more than a 1.0 shield since a 1.4 is technically worse :P
Title: Re: Project Titan by Uomoz & Elate
Post by: Uomoz on September 24, 2012, 10:05:29 AM
Yeah fixing that shield efficiency problem xD. Subsystems are as awesome as you can conceive em for the Titans (I'll just edit the DPS values to balance em a bit) but you are free on that compartment.

Missile slots can be smalls or large aswell (those are small missile slots you have there, see the ulquiorra for the large ones).

EDIT: I said bull**** Ulquiorra doesn't have any large missile, PM me if you need the large missile slot sprite ;)

I'll see what I can do!

Could it be too many projectiles? even non tracking ones can start hogging cpu cycles if you have enough guns that need to be aimed.

consolidate weaponry into higher damage per shot but lower refire rate??

It sure is not related to engines and smoke trails, and somewhat related to weaponry. Will try what you suggested Flash.

EDIT: So after halving RoF, eliminating all engines, smoke trails, muzzle flashes, and other optimizations seems like drones systems are the cause of the lag.

The current balance is like that. Note that current Titans are the smallest of their kind (Small Tier). I just realized that Titans vs Titans alone gets old really fast so players can also choose some form of fleet composition this way.

Large weapons (only on Titans) wipe entire squadrons with a single shot ;).

I think about huge Titan ship 2 weapon types
1. Titan Big weapon slow shot, long range, high damage, more exp range, very less ammo/long time reload
2. Titan Small weapon (this weapon not less than 20 on titan ship) speed shot, long range, very low damage, very more ammo/shot time reload

The situation about weapons right now is this:

1) Very Small, no slot graphics, dps from 5 to 20, very short range. Found on SubTitan ships and Fighters\Drones and sometime on Titans aswell.
2) Small, no slot graphics, dps from 20 to 80,  variable range. Found on SubTitan ships and Titans. Titans have up to 120 of this weapons.
3) Medium, small slot graphics, dps around 200, long range. Found on very few big SubTitan ships and Titans. Titans have up to 40 of this.
4) Large, large slot graphics, dps around 600 with strong specialization, uncanny range. Found on Titans.

Stop attacking Uomoz over this. It is up to Thule to donate those ships; and if he did, so be it. Uomoz does not have to give credit unless Thule specifies that he does. And it is up to Thule to cry outrage if Uomoz didn't get permission.

So I hope that this is the end of this discussion. If there is an issue (which there isn't), it should be taken to private messages.

You want the dev? It's just a bunch of random missions to test Ai though (pd ai, attack guns ai, missiles ai, autofire ai, piloting ai), hardly anything to interact. It's fancy though. Lemme see if it's stable and I'll post it :). Performance wise, isn't going above 30 fps, but it has to be expected with literally thousands of guns and hundreds of ships. That said, I optimized it like a madman.

Other than that, smooth 60fps... With 5% idle so there isn't much margin. Still, nicely done!

Though that brown titan was propelled with imagination (no engine flames), overall mod is running better than I would expect. Especially that mission with badass battle, where dozens (if not hundreds) of fighters where fighting besides and two titans in basically 1v1. Well, almost... fighters were blocking him all the time, so I couldn't properly use main cannon :P But other than that, nice fireworks.

I'm in the process of replacing all procedural engines with animated decos to get more FPS. All weapons stats sounds graphics are temp, the current dev is something I want to use to get the "feel" of the combat right.

MOAR asplosions! Now the AI/graphics are blazingly fast and I can start focusing on actual content. Is anyone interested in participating (sprites, ideas, anything really)? Unlike for vanilla balanced mods you can go ham in PT.

Random question (sorry if this was answered in the preceeding pages somewhere), but who is the voice actor for the Titans trailer/ where did the audio come from?

Whopps late response, the audio is from an EVE online trailer :)

Did a little test run. Surprisingly fun to play and watch the slow combat as the titans blast each other to bits piece by piece. I love how the masses of these things are so ridiculously high that when regular vanilla ships tap them, they just vaporize.

Considering that these things are "Small" titans, should their speeds be increased a little? 20 is really slow (and makes the 0-flux boost kinda strange).

The fact that the zero-flux boost is a flat rate has always bewildered me, especially with mod factions that add super-heavy (and accordingly slow) behemoths. Really should be a proportional and/or percentage increase.

That tiny gif is fine, but you might throw the larger ones on the previous page into a spoiler; my poor browser has a heart-attack every time I scroll past'em.

The problem with massive shiips with hundrds of turrets is that we are restricted to 5 weapon groups, which makes effective use impossible...and the UI clutter  :P

Most of the weapons won't show up on the UI (only the very big ones)

Will this mod contain custom ships from other mods? (the big ones?)

So what versions of starsector/lazylib/shaderlib does this require?

Hey, Any chance I could use the sprites for the massive ships in this? I'm looking to make my own version of a Titan-esque mod :)

D= ... that's what I get for not buying a more sturdy barrel.. I think I found some good use for those templar flux cores....

seeing as how they have a tendency to explode quite violently, i'm not so sure Templar flux cores would be the best material for something that's supposed to withstand gunfire.

on the other hand, that would be one hell of a barrel!
