I read Marines were used to cap ships prior to .8(?). What use are they now? Can i add them to my colony to make it more secure or something?
-
You can space them. Apart from that and raiding the whole sector down into complete chaos to satisfy your avarice they are utterly useless.
-
You need them to raid colonies for cargo and blueprints.
-
They will become useful again next update.

Currently marines are used for raiding. You need them for stealing blueprints or commodities, or for disrupting industries on planets you don't like. E.g. if you want to own the fuel market for a year, you can disrupt Sindria and Nachiketa's fuel production facilities. If you really want particular blueprints that you haven't found by salvaging, you can raid planets with heavy industry to get blueprints from that faction's blueprint pool. You can also make a hefty profit running marines to certain pirate or luddic path markets.

Worse comes to worse u can always load the jarheads into cannons and fire them at the enemy.... ORK style :P Joking aside Originally they were used for ship boarding before it was replaced with ship salvaging. Now they are just used as raiding in general right now.
