Title: [0.9a] Inimical / Habitable Planetary Conditions on Same Planet
Post by: BTracer on March 11, 2019, 05:47:34 PM
Mentioned here (http://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=12414.0) but seemed to miss that it's the descriptions of each that contradict each other:

Inimical
...is deadly to unprotected humans...

Habitable
...can survive unprotected...

I really get the sense that Habitable only refers to the atmosphere and mayyyybe surface temperature, tbh. But it could probably stand to be a little more clear in its description... feels weird when it comes up alongside anything else that specifies special equipment is necessary, which is like, most of the hazard conditions heh.

I agree, both can be on the same planet, I just think the word 'unprotected' should be removed from the Habitable description. Habitable could then mean: In a dome, in a hazmat suit, with a breathing apprentice, or shorts and a t-shirt  ;D

I'm not seeing this as contradictory.

Habitable to me means that in the planet has a breathable atmosphere, at an acceptable temperate and pressure, along with gravity inside a livable limit (none of which is nescessarily comfortable, just survivable).
I'm 100% fine with "uprotected" being part of the habitable description. After all what is a naturally habitable place, but somewhere you can exist without any extra environmental effort?

And Inimical means that there is some peculiarity of the envrionment of this planet that just does not play nice with "foreign" organisms, and would make living on that planet a nuisance with all the extra effort you have to take to avoid <thing>, and a misery should you come into contact with <thing>.
Basically a "Deathworld".
You can technically live there. But the planet really doesn't want you to.
