Title: Story and Major Events

Does anyone know what causes them or how to get them? I got the first Story mission and I really liked it, but I don't understand is it random or what?

I have never seen Major Events active.

I think there are only 2: red planet and stashed AI core. Red planet is highlighted by different color (green) in bar.
