Hoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooly sammich! Thank you so much for sharing this! It looks absolutely awesome Cheesy You are great!

I do have though to ask; Is it necessary for your faction files to include any information afar from "portraits"? Doesn't that means that if the game updates in any way, or if another mod alters them, your faction files will return that to the vanilla defaults, depending on the version you made this on?

I ask because I altered them to contain only the id and the portrait, because I tried to use the on 0.7.1a and it returned an error about mudskipper2_CS, which I am guessing does not exist in 0.7.1a. Removing any info but the portrait and the ID, let me use the portraits and they seem to load normally in game.

I am not saying this to make it backwards compatible, as much as doing that would potentially let it be used in any version, as long as the faction ids do not change, and it would not alter anything but the portraits.

Here in the far future... EVERYONE IS NOW JAPANESE!!!!! (with several token Americans/Russians thrown in for diversity's sake  ;))

Jokes aside, I feel like the faces could use a bit more color, they feel a little desaturated atm.

@weltall - Doing what you did and removing everything but the portrait in the .faction files is absolutely the way to go. On mod load, the modded .faction files get merged with the base .faction files, and only the fields that you've modified are changed.

Considering the avatar of the creator, why isn't Royco Cup of Soup man a potential portrait choice?

Yep, fixed.

Yeah, the Front mission 2 portraits could be saturated some more, haven't done it yet though, maybe for the next update. In the meantime, the FM3 ones are much more lively.

Eh! As much as i'd like to add it to the game, i'm not sure everyone would want some long necked freak in a so called "lore friendly" mod!

Anyway, first update, fixed some of the issues.

If I happen to find a set of portraits that are particularly good, would you be interested in adding them all in to the pack? I'm talking with a few friends who are considering ripping a large number of portraits from various space games, and I figured we might as well get them all together in once place.

It is nice to have portraits so the world will not be a nice large world of cloned people. I have been using portraits I took from Trashman's VNS Addon, but unlike yours they were quite mixed and some looked weird. Yours merge much more in the Starsector universe. It is really so nice~

Yes! You added a lot of my favorite ones from Tashman's pack :D Woot! Thanks for the update with these! You cleaned them so nicely  ;D

Something minor; on the player.faction file, some entries are used twice, ending up making these picture appear twice in the character avatar selection.

Hey Helmut, I collected some portraits from a few different sources, they're all anime styled but I think they would look decent in Starsector. Take a look through this set and add them to your pack if you want.

Ah yes, i remember those... Have to say i kinda wanted to add them at first but finally decided against it. I'd like to keep the pack "moe-free", even though i guess some of the stuff i already added can be considered close to it... Still, there's already 187 portraits available, more than enough in my opinion.

I won't add them, at least not now. I'll keep that folder around and see if i can eventually tweak them to be more fitting, but no promises.

Question: would it be possible to import our own pictures with this mod? or will we have to make do with what's given to us? (not that I'm saying the pictures are bad, they're actually quite... sexy...)
Title: Re: [0.7.2a] Portrait Pack v1.2.2
Post by: Weltall on March 20, 2016, 11:54:21 PM
Importing them would not be hard, as much as editing the faction files that say which faction can use which picture. I say this because I have had my own portrait pack before this. If anything, you can just replace some of his pictures with your own ones, using the same names as he does. That way your picture will be imported and you will not have to edit the faction files.

Title: Re: [0.7.2a] Portrait Pack v1.2.2
Post by: HELMUT on April 03, 2016, 06:21:12 AM
I personally didn't draw them, those are sprites ripped from Front Mission 2 and 3, plus a few other ones from TrashMan own portrait pack.

However, all of them have been tweaked to fit SS's original art a bit more. All of them have been resized via http://waifu2x.udp.jp/, which gives a neat painted effect that is hard to reproduce otherwise. I duplicated the original layer and did a high pass (radius 2) on it, set the layer as "vivid light" at roughly 40/50% opacity to get a sharper, more pronounced look, like David's original portraits. Plus some brightness/contrast/saturation/smart sharpen on top of that. Also a black background, obviously.

Hey, i've got some portraits from a game name Raijin 7. Through they're sized a little bit strange, you can edit it out and add it to the collection if you wish. or an inspiration. i'm uploading the portraits to my mega. They're 90x110.

That's why it's only marked as having compatibility for the previous version of starsector, not this one. Every update breaks the mods. All of them.

So for anyone who's having load errors, turns out the version provided just had a syntax error in the JSON, and the mod is actually 100% compatible.

Long story short, to get it to work, do this:

1. Open "data/world/factions/persean_league.faction" (without the quotes). This will be directly inside the Portrait Pack folder in the mods directory, so if your starsector is installed in C:\Program Files(x86), this would be "C:\Program Files (x86)\Fractal Softworks\Starsector\mods\Portrait pack\data\world\factions\persean_league.faction".
2. The first five lines should be this:
Code
{
"portraits":{
"standard_male":[
"standard_male":[
"graphics/portraits/prt_2.png",
Simply remove one of the duplicated lines.

Are you going to update this thing?

If not, can you give us a way to add custom portraits to the game?  Preferably ones that can easily be removed whether one feels like it?
These portraits are very cool, and it would be a shame if a cool mod like this become unavailable to higher versions.

I don't have GIMP, so i don't know if the tools names are the same as Photoshop. Moreover, i don't quite remember how i did those to begin with.

Not much more i can tell you than what i said in the previous post : black background, strong saturation, strong contrast. You can also google for some gimp "paint effect" tutorial to help.

Usually - no. But some people reported slow behavior in some situation (like character creation) if too many portraits are in a game. However this takes no (or minor) effect on general gameplay, and require more than couple portrait pack installed.

Any chance to get this portrait pack without the Anime/Manga stylized portraits? I really like the ones that blend into the game but 1 to 134 don't mix with the rest of the game at all.

You might want to just manually remove the offending ones. Although, you would have to check that they aren't added elsewhere/to factions etc

I made a mod of this mod, basically a very stripped-down version of it, that only includes portraits that I felt were immsersion-friendly;  Mostly removing things that were too anime or just blatantly pinup girls (not to every one's taste).   No original work, just a curated selection.   Thought I'd share because why not.
