Title: [0.8.1a] Steiner Foundation v1.2.1 – Easier campaign (update 2018-09-20)
Post by: Histidine on December 18, 2015, 08:49:02 PM
Steiner Foundation v1.2.1
Download (https://bitbucket.org/Histidine/foundation/downloads/SteinerFoundation_1.2.1.zip)
Git repository (https://bitbucket.org/Histidine/foundation)

TL;DR

Features to come (maybe, someday)

What's this about?
People had been bringing up how difficult the early game in Starsector is, so I did some stuff to make it a little easier. Good escort ships are easier to get, and losing ships isn't as much of a setback.

Changelog (https://bitbucket.org/Histidine/foundation/wiki/Changelog)
Code
v1.2.1
* Proper handling of Nexerelin's random sector
* Foundation store sells fighters again
* Lawson's Point really can't be invaded this time
* Text tweaks/fixes

v1.2
* Updates/compatibility for Starsector 0.8.1
    * Disable tutorial mission
    * Rescale levels for insurance
* Insurance makes a small payout for recovered ships, covers dead/MIA officers (from Nexerelin)
* Nexerelin: Lawson's Point can't be invaded; better placement in non-Corvus mode
* Add a memory key to let mod markets not have Foundation representatives
* Some text/dialog fixes/improvements

Spoiler
When the Administratum dropped its charges of high treason and reinstated him in the navy with full honors, Steiner was ironically left in a new difficult position: that of a successful, still-young man with little to do. His life's mission was fulfilled: the truth of the Battle of the Conflagration had been revealed; his father's name was cleared, and the disgraced Admiral Gedderren had been convicted of cowardice in the face of the enemy and executed. After so many cycles on a life-and-death struggle in the most conflict-sundered parts of the Sector, the prospects of holding flag rank in a rare period of peacetime was a difficult adjustment to make. For a while he took leave to put his family's estate back together, a task which kept him occupied while it lasted, but soon that too was accomplished and he was left again to ponder what to do with his restored life.

Once again it was his old friend Hartford Lawson who helped him out, this time simply by making an idle comment: "Say, why don't you start your own charity like all the other rich families?"

Eventide, Baumgart Academy Press

The Mark Steiner Foundation provides various services to new starfarers setting out for the first time, aiding anyone without fear or favour. Its free insurance service is perhaps the best well-known, protects traders and bounty hunters alike from potentially crippling financial losses.

The Foundation store at the organization's headquarters on Lawson's Point in the Jangala system offers high-quality, military-grade ships at a discount. Available for purchase is a wide range of vessels suitable for first-timers, whether as personal ship, escort or logistical auxiliary.
(More ships are available with Ship/Weapon Pack (http://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=11018.0))

The Foundation's efforts are kept going by contributions from well-established traders and commanders. Veterans are requested to give back to the next generation of adventurers.
(Foundation representatives can be found on Lawson's Point, or on any market of at least size 5 whose faction is not hostile to the independents)

I started trying to stat out a McKenna but WarShips have vast amounts of weapons compared to anything Starsector, modded or otherwise.  The McKenna in particular has nearly 80 of them, all the largest possible of their type, 3 fighter bays, and tons of armor.  Even ships much smaller than the SLDF's rigid space dong pack scores of guns pointing in every direction.  Someone at FASA must have really liked Gunbuster.

Hmm Is this in any way related to the Steiner fanfic that is currently being made into a novel by Pendragon called hope and duty, as the protagonist's family is called the Stieners. Here's the story up to this point: http://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=6561.0;wap2

And the discussion created by Pendragon to show that he is making the fanfic into a full novel : https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjnvqekjoXKAhVYz2MKHXc6AbsQFggcMAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Ffractalsoftworks.com%2Fforum%2Findex.php%3Ftopic%3D4284.0&usg=AFQjCNHT-WNd55Cp30RxhYczmqriVddltA&sig2=ib7RF7MyVegYstcp-MXFdw&bvm=bv.110151844,d.cGc

Firstly thank you for such an interesting and so useful mod.
In my opinion it turned out to be a particularly useful function allows you to buy reputation of factions.
I have a small suggestion how to make more diverse this mod. I think it would be interesting if in the beginning of the game, when the player selects in menu the type and the technical level of his future fleet, he would have the opportunity to choose ships of popular modded factions (if such mods are installed). For example, as it was done in the Exerelin. I understand that it somewhat complicates the code. It will be necessary to do check for installed mods. But I think it would have made the beginning of the campaign, more interesting and varied.
Thank you again for such a useful and original mod.

That start ship selection is an SS+ thing. (and including mod factions is probably too complicated using the current code)

I'm looking at my own implementation of start ship selection for Nexerelin, although that's a long way off.

Hey,it's not possible to make the stein be a global shop?Getting to the station cost so much supply and fuel.In a modded game with faction with their own homeworld and a bigger map,it's even worse.

You shouldn't really be going to the Steiner Foundation if you are at a point where you can go far out into the sector without any problems. They're for selling you solid early-mid game ships, if you're flying far out into different systems you shouldn't need what the Foundation has.

Just reporting a interesting flaw. I loaded the Steiner Foundation with its required mods and utility mods (no other faction mods, Nexerelin or Dynasector; just the core game) for a Vanilla play through and to ease up the early game pressure a bit.

There's nothing wrong with the mod itself, but when a player starts with a the option of 'Smuggler' and having chosen 'made a deal with a prominent pirate captain', it creates a situation where the combat related portion of the tutorial after accepting it at Lawson's Point is unable to be carried out. This ultimately fails the tutorial mission.

The reason would obviously be because of the relationship status with the pirates (<50) and the neutral relations with the independent. Neither trust the player to allow them to join the combat.

I haven't run through all the options where the relationship with the pirates may fall below that mark though.

Update for 0.8.1a!

Dunno if want to continue this mod henceforth, the vanilla early game should now be sufficiently tame that the Foundation is no longer required.

Some people still find it steep, especially if they don't want to spend points in the industry (money) tree. not every one has found storms easily navigable, some complaints have been fielded about how far pirate bounties are from civilization and supposedly they have been nerfed somehow? I don't need it but it still is a really nice mod for beginners.

Thoughts from someone who doesn't mind the vanilla curve, but likes where Steiner seems to be going:

- The military ship availability eliminates a big part of the growth / player progression part of the game. The discount seems generous as well. I understand that's the point, but I'm not a big fan. Glad it can be largely ignored (by not patronizing the Steiner station).
- I like the insurance feature but would prefer to have to pay for it (i.e., disabled by default but purchaseable through an option in markets, for maybe 40-50% of fleet / ship value). Not sure how feasible that is, but it would totally make this mod go from an optional "easy mode" to a must-have for most players. That could be something to be enabled/disabled through an options file.
- Love the relationship bribing. Most freeform-type games have something like that and it's a great addition that almost makes this a must-have.
- Super excited for loans and the potential consequences of nonpayment (i.e. bounty hunters).

I'm either stupid and forgot, or has something changed?
I can't find agent to start those missions at the beginning (like one where we are trained how to use sensors and smuggle etc.), there is no one on Steiner or Jangala station other than representatives to bribe.

I removed the Steiner tutorial because there's a better vanilla tutorial now.

Maybe...? Not sure if the early game difficulty is in particular need of further reduction with the Galatian stipend (i.e. that the QoL improvement for the player is worth the time investment on my part).

Well, I might take a look again after Nexerelin is updated.

Yo made an account just to reply to this.  The early game help isn't necessary imo, however the whole pay credits to improve relationships seems amazing.  late game you just get spammed over and over by pirates, pathers and all the other factions and instead of having to fly around and keep doing *** for them to increase your rep it'd be great if you could just dump some of your funds into their markets and be done with it.  It feels difficult to explore late game and this would help IMO.

I found that Nexerelin (or maybe it's Vayra's sector that does it?) helps a lot with that, by virtue of being able to annihilate pirates and pathers alike in the mid-late game. Most pirate bases have a ground defense level of like 200 or so, so you can pop them one by one with ease. It's a worthy investment as you can also transfer the markets to get reputation with X faction, ally with said faction and then reap all the benefits.
